Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
- Les ennemis de Juda et de Benjamin apprirent que les fils de la captivité bâtissaient un temple à l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël. (Ⅱ) - Audierunt autem hostes Judæ et Benjamin, quia filii captivitatis ædificarent templum Domino Deo Israël : (Ⅳ) - 1 ׃4 וישמעו צרי יהודה ובנימן כי בני הגולה בונים היכל ליהוה אלהי ישראל (Ⅴ)

Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
- Ils vinrent auprès de Zorobabel et des chefs de familles, et leur dirent: Nous bâtirons avec vous; car, comme vous, nous invoquons votre Dieu, et nous lui offrons des sacrifices depuis le temps d'Ésar Haddon, roi d'Assyrie, qui nous a fait monter ici. (Ⅱ) - et accedentes ad Zorobabel, et ad principes patrum, dixerunt eis : Ædificemus vobiscum, quia ita ut vos, quærimus Deum vestrum : ecce nos immolavimus victimas a diebus Asor Haddan regis Assur, qui adduxit nos huc. (Ⅳ) - 2 ׃4 ויגשו אל זרבבל ואל ראשי האבות ויאמרו להם נבנה עמכם כי ככם נדרוש לאלהיכם *ולא **ולו אנחנו זבחים מימי אסר חדן מלך אשור המעלה אתנו פה (Ⅴ)

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
- Mais Zorobabel, Josué, et les autres chefs des familles d'Israël, leur répondirent: Ce n'est pas à vous et à nous de bâtir la maison de notre Dieu; nous la bâtirons nous seuls à l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, comme nous l'a ordonné le roi Cyrus, roi de Perse. (Ⅱ) - Et dixit eis Zorobabel, et Josue, et reliqui principes patrum Israël : Non est vobis et nobis ut ædificemus domum Deo nostro, sed nos ipsi soli ædificabimus Domino Deo nostro, sicut præcepit nobis Cyrus rex Persarum. (Ⅳ) - 3 ׃4 ויאמר להם זרבבל וישוע ושאר ראשי האבות לישראל לא לכם ולנו לבנות בית לאלהינו כי אנחנו יחד נבנה ליהוה אלהי ישראל כאשר צונו המלך כורש מלך פרס (Ⅴ)

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
- Alors les gens du pays découragèrent le peuple de Juda; ils l'intimidèrent pour l'empêcher de bâtir, (Ⅱ) - Factum est igitur ut populus terræ impediret manus populi Judæ, et turbaret eos in ædificando. (Ⅳ) - 4 ׃4 ויהי עם הארץ מרפים ידי עם יהודה *ומבלהים **ומבהלים אותם לבנות (Ⅴ)

And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
- et ils gagnèrent à prix d'argent des conseillers pour faire échouer son entreprise. Il en fut ainsi pendant toute la vie de Cyrus, roi de Perse, et jusqu'au règne de Darius, roi de Perse. (Ⅱ) - Conduxerunt autem adversus eos consiliatores, ut destruerent consilium eorum omnibus diebus Cyri regis Persarum, et usque ad regnum Darii regis Persarum.\ (Ⅳ) - 5 ׃4 וסכרים עליהם יועצים להפר עצתם כל ימי כורש מלך פרס ועד מלכות דריוש מלך פרס (Ⅴ)

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
- Sous le règne d'Assuérus, au commencement de son règne, ils écrivirent une accusation contre les habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem. (Ⅱ) - In regno autem Assueri, in principio regni ejus, scripserunt accusationem adversus habitatores Judæ et Jerusalem. (Ⅳ) - 6 ׃4 ובמלכות אחשורוש בתחלת מלכותו כתבו שטנה על ישבי יהודה וירושלם ס (Ⅴ)

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
- Et du temps d'Artaxerxès, Bischlam, Mithredath, Thabeel, et le reste de leurs collègues, écrivirent à Artaxerxès, roi de Perse. La lettre fut transcrite en caractères araméens et traduite en araméen. (Ⅱ) - Et in diebus Artaxerxis scripsit Beselam, Mithridates, et Thabeel, et reliqui qui erant in consilio eorum, ad Artaxerxem regem Persarum : epistola autem accusationis scripta erat syriace, et legebatur sermone syro. (Ⅳ) - 7 ׃4 ובימי ארתחששתא כתב בשלם מתרדת טבאל ושאר *כנותו **כנותיו על *ארתחששתא **ארתחששת מלך פרס וכתב[C] הנשתון כתוב ארמית ומתרגם ארמית פ (Ⅴ)

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
- Rehum, gouverneur, et Schimschaï, secrétaire écrivirent au roi Artaxerxès la lettre suivante concernant Jérusalem: (Ⅱ) - Reum Beelteem, et Samsai scriba, scripserunt epistolam unam de Jerusalem Artaxerxi regi, hujuscemodi : (Ⅳ) - 8 ׃4 רחום בעל טעם ושמשי ספרא כתבו אגרה חדה על ירושלם לארתחששתא מלכא כנמא (Ⅴ)

Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
- Rehum, gouverneur, Schimschaï, secrétaire, et le reste de leurs collègues, ceux de Din, d'Arpharsathac, de Tharpel, d'Apharas, d'Érec, de Babylone, de Suse, de Déha, d'Élam, (Ⅱ) - Reum Beelteem, et Samsai scriba, et reliqui consiliatores eorum, Dinæi, et Apharsathachæi, Terphalæi, Apharsæi, Erchuæi, Babylonii, Susanechæi, Dievi, et Ælamitæ, (Ⅳ) - 9 ׃4 אדין רחום בעל טעם ושמשי ספרא ושאר כנותהון דיניא ואפרסתכיא טרפליא אפרסיא *ארכוי **ארכויא בבליא שושנכיא *דהוא **דהיא עלמיא (Ⅴ)

And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
- et les autres peuples que le grand et illustre Osnappar a transportés et établis dans la ville de Samarie et autres lieux de ce côté du fleuve, etc. (Ⅱ) - et ceteri de gentibus, quas transtulit Asenaphar magnus et gloriosus, et habitare eas fecit in civitatibus Samariæ, et in reliquis regionibus trans flumen in pace (Ⅳ) - 10 ׃4 ושאר אמיא די הגלי אסנפר רבא ויקירא והותב המו בקריה די שמרין ושאר עבר נהרה וכענת (Ⅴ)

This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
- C'est ici la copie de la lettre qu'ils envoyèrent au roi Artaxerxès: Tes serviteurs, les gens de ce côté du fleuve, etc. (Ⅱ) - (hoc est exemplar epistolæ, quam miserunt ad eum), Artaxerxi regi, servi tui, viri qui sunt trans fluvium, salutem dicunt. (Ⅳ) - 11 ׃4 דנה פרשגן אגרתא די שלחו עלוהי על ארתחששתא מלכא עבדיך[Q][q] אנש עבר נהרה וכענת פ (Ⅴ)

Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
- Que le roi sache que les Juifs partis de chez toi et arrivés parmi nous à Jérusalem rebâtissent la ville rebelle et méchante, en relèvent les murs et en restaurent les fondements. (Ⅱ) - Notum sit regi quia Judæi, qui ascenderunt a te ad nos, venerunt in Jerusalem civitatem rebellem et pessimam, quam ædificant exstruentes muros ejus, et parietes componentes. (Ⅳ) - 12 ׃4 ידיע להוא למלכא די יהודיא די סלקו מן לותך עלינא אתו לירושלם קריתא מרדתא *ובאישתא **ובישתא[y] בנין *ושורי **ושוריא *אשכללו **שכלילו ואשיא יחיטו (Ⅴ)

Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
- Que le roi sache donc que, si cette ville est rebâtie et si ses murs sont relevés, ils ne paieront ni tribut, ni impôt, ni droit de passage, et que le trésor royal en souffrira. (Ⅱ) - Nunc igitur notum sit regi, quia si civitas illa ædificata fuerit, et muri ejus instaurati, tributum, et vectigal, et annuos reditus non dabunt, et usque ad reges hæc noxa perveniet. (Ⅳ) - 13 ׃4 כען ידיע להוא למלכא די הן קריתא דך תתבנא ושוריה ישתכללון מנדה בלו והלך לא ינתנון ואפתם מלכים תהנזק (Ⅴ)

Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
- Or, comme nous mangeons le sel du palais et qu'il ne nous paraît pas convenable de voir mépriser le roi, nous envoyons au roi ces informations. (Ⅱ) - Nos autem memores salis, quod in palatio comedimus, et quia læsiones regis videre nefas ducimus, idcirco misimus et nuntiavimus regi, (Ⅳ) - 14 ׃4 כען כל קבל די מלח היכלא מלחנא וערות מלכא לא אריך לנא למחזא על דנה שלחנא והודענא למלכא (Ⅴ)

That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
- Qu'on fasse des recherches dans le livre des mémoires de tes pères; et tu trouveras et verras dans le livre des mémoires que cette ville est une ville rebelle, funeste aux rois et aux provinces, et qu'on s'y est livré à la révolte dès les temps anciens. C'est pourquoi cette ville a été détruite. (Ⅱ) - ut recenseas in libris historiarum patrum tuorum, et invenies scriptum in commentariis : et scies quoniam urbs illa, urbs rebellis est, et nocens regibus et provinciis, et bella concitantur in ea ex diebus antiquis : quam ob rem et civitas ipsa destructa est. (Ⅳ) - 15 ׃4 די יבקר בספר דכרניא די אבהתך ותהשכח בספר דכרניא ותנדע די קריתא דך קריא מרדא ומהנזקת מלכין ומדנן ואשתדור עבדין בגוה מן יומת עלמא על דנה קריתא דך החרבת (Ⅴ)

We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
- Nous faisons savoir au roi que, si cette ville est rebâtie et si ses murs sont relevés, par cela même tu n'auras plus de possession de ce côté du fleuve. (Ⅱ) - Nuntiamus nos regi, quoniam si civitas illa ædificata fuerit, et muri ipsius instaurati, possessionem trans fluvium non habebis.\ (Ⅳ) - 16 ׃4 מהודעין אנחנה למלכא די הן קריתא דך תתבנא ושוריה ישתכללון לקבל דנה חלק בעבר נהרא לא איתי לך פ (Ⅴ)

Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
- Réponse envoyée par le roi à Rehum, gouverneur, à Schimschaï, secrétaire, et au reste de leurs collègues, demeurant à Samarie et autres lieux de l'autre côté du fleuve: Salut, etc. (Ⅱ) - Verbum misit rex ad Reum Beelteem, et Samsai scribam, et ad reliquos, qui erant in consilio eorum habitatores Samariæ, et ceteris trans fluvium, salutem dicens et pacem. (Ⅳ) - 17 ׃4 פתגמא שלח מלכא על רחום בעל טעם ושמשי ספרא ושאר כנותהון די יתבין בשמרין ושאר עבר נהרה שלם וכעת ס (Ⅴ)

The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
- La lettre que vous nous avez envoyée a été lue exactement devant moi. (Ⅱ) - Accusatio, quam misistis ad nos, manifeste lecta est coram me, (Ⅳ) - 18 ׃4 נשתונא די שלחתון עלינא מפרש קרי קדמי (Ⅴ)

And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
- J'ai donné ordre de faire des recherches; et l'on a trouvé que dès les temps anciens cette ville s'est soulevée contre les rois, et qu'on s'y est livré à la sédition et à la révolte. (Ⅱ) - et a me præceptum est : et recensuerunt, inveneruntque quoniam civitas illa a diebus antiquis adversum reges rebellat, et seditiones, et prælia concitantur in ea : (Ⅳ) - 19 ׃4 ומני שים טעם ובקרו והשכחו די קריתא דך מן יומת עלמא על מלכין מתנשאה ומרד ואשתדור מתעבד בה (Ⅴ)

There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
- Il y eut à Jérusalem des rois puissants, maîtres de tout le pays de l'autre côté du fleuve, et auxquels on payait tribut, impôt, et droit de passage. (Ⅱ) - nam et reges fortissimi fuerunt in Jerusalem, qui et dominati sunt omni regioni quæ trans fluvium est : tributum quoque et vectigal, et reditus accipiebant. (Ⅳ) - 20 ׃4 ומלכין תקיפין הוו על ירושלם ושליטין בכל עבר נהרה ומדה בלו והלך מתיהב להון (Ⅴ)

Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
- En conséquence, ordonnez de faire cesser les travaux de ces gens, afin que cette ville ne se rebâtisse point avant une autorisation de ma part. (Ⅱ) - Nunc ergo audite sententiam : prohibeatis viros illos, ut urbs illa non ædificetur donec si forte a me jussum fuerit. (Ⅳ) - 21 ׃4 כען שימו טעם[P] לבטלא גבריא אלך וקריתא דך לא תתבנא עד מני טעמא יתשם (Ⅴ)

Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
- Gardez-vous de mettre en cela de la négligence, de peur que le mal n'augmente au préjudice des rois. (Ⅱ) - Videte ne negligenter hoc impleatis, et paulatim crescat malum contra reges.\ (Ⅳ) - 22 ׃4 וזהירין הוו שלו למעבד על דנה למה ישגא חבלא להנזקת מלכין ס (Ⅴ)

Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
- Aussitôt que la copie de la lettre du roi Artaxerxès eut été lue devant Rehum, Schimschaï, le secrétaire, et leurs collègues, ils allèrent en hâte à Jérusalem vers les Juifs, et firent cesser leurs travaux par violence et par force. (Ⅱ) - Itaque exemplum edicti Artaxerxis regis lectum est coram Reum Beelteem, et Samsai scriba, et consiliariis eorum : et abierunt festini in Jerusalem ad Judæos, et prohibuerunt eos in brachio et robore. (Ⅳ) - 23 ׃4 אדין מן די פרשגן נשתונא די *ארתחששתא **ארתחששת מלכא קרי קדם רחום ושמשי ספרא וכנותהון אזלו בבהילו לירושלם על יהודיא ובטלו המו באדרע וחיל ס (Ⅴ)

Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
- Alors s'arrêta l'ouvrage de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, et il fut interrompu jusqu'à la seconde année du règne de Darius, roi de Perse. (Ⅱ) - Tunc intermissum est opus domus Domini in Jerusalem, et non fiebat usque ad annum secundum regni Darii regis Persarum. (Ⅳ) - 24 ׃4 באדין בטלת עבידת בית אלהא די בירושלם והות בטלא עד שנת תרתין למלכות דריוש מלך פרס פ (Ⅴ)
