1. 1

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

- Il y avait dans le pays d'Uts un homme qui s'appelait Job. Et cet homme était intègre et droit; il craignait Dieu, et se détournait du mal. (Ⅱ)

- ἄνθρωπός τις ἠ̃ν ἐν χώρα̨ τη̨̃ Αυσίτιδι ὡ̨̃ ὄνομα Ιωβ καὶ ἠ̃ν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκει̃νος ἀληθινός ἄμεμπτος δίκαιος θεοσεβής ἀπεχόμενος ἀπὸ παντὸς πονηρου̃ πράγματος (Ⅲ)

- Vir erat in terra Hus, nomine Job : et erat vir ille simplex, et rectus, ac timens Deum, et recedens a malo. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 1 ׃1 איש היה בארץ עוץ איוב שמו והיה האיש ההוא תם וישר וירא אלהים וסר מרע ‬ (Ⅴ)

And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

- Il lui naquit sept fils et trois filles. (Ⅱ)

- ἐγένοντο δὲ αὐτω̨̃ υἱοὶ ἑπτὰ καὶ θυγατέρες τρει̃ς (Ⅲ)

- Natique sunt ei septem filii, et tres filiæ. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 2 ׃1 ויולדו לו שבעה בנים ושלוש בנות ‬ (Ⅴ)

His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

- Il possédait sept mille brebis, trois mille chameaux, cinq cents paires de boeufs, cinq cents ânesses, et un très grand nombre de serviteurs. Et cet homme était le plus considérable de tous les fils de l'Orient. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἠ̃ν τὰ κτήνη αὐτου̃ πρόβατα ἑπτακισχίλια κάμηλοι τρισχίλιαι ζεύγη βοω̃ν πεντακόσια ὄνοι θήλειαι νομάδες πεντακόσιαι καὶ ὑπηρεσία πολλὴ σφόδρα καὶ ἔργα μεγάλα ἠ̃ν αὐτω̨̃ ἐπὶ τη̃ς γη̃ς καὶ ἠ̃ν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκει̃νος εὐγενὴς τω̃ν ἀφ' ἡλίου ἀνατολω̃ν (Ⅲ)

- Et fuit possessio ejus septem millia ovium, et tria millia camelorum, quingenta quoque juga boum, et quingentæ asinæ, ac familia multa nimis : eratque vir ille magnus inter omnes orientales. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 3 ׃1 ויהי מקנהו שבעת אלפי צאן ושלשת אלפי גמלים וחמש מאות צמד בקר וחמש מאות אתונות ועבדה רבה מאד ויהי האיש ההוא גדול מכל בני קדם ‬ (Ⅴ)

And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

- Ses fils allaient les uns chez les autres et donnaient tour à tour un festin, et ils invitaient leurs trois soeurs à manger et à boire avec eux. (Ⅱ)

- συμπορευόμενοι δὲ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτου̃ πρὸς ἀλλήλους ἐποιου̃σαν πότον καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν συμπαραλαμβάνοντες ἅμα καὶ τὰς τρει̃ς ἀδελφὰς αὐτω̃ν ἐσθίειν καὶ πίνειν μετ' αὐτω̃ν (Ⅲ)

- Et ibant filii ejus, et faciebant convivium per domos, unusquisque in die suo. Et mittentes vocabant tres sorores suas, ut comederent et biberent cum eis. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 4 ׃1 והלכו בניו ועשו משתה בית איש יומו ושלחו וקראו לשלשת *אחיתיהם **אחיותיהם לאכל ולשתות עמהם ‬ (Ⅴ)

And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

- Et quand les jours de festin étaient passés, Job appelait et sanctifiait ses fils, puis il se levait de bon matin et offrait pour chacun d'eux un holocauste; car Job disait: Peut-être mes fils ont-ils péché et ont-ils offensé Dieu dans leur coeur. C'est ainsi que Job avait coutume d'agir. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ὡς ἂν συνετελέσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι του̃ πότου ἀπέστελλεν Ιωβ καὶ ἐκαθάριζεν αὐτοὺς ἀνιστάμενος τὸ πρωὶ καὶ προσέφερεν περὶ αὐτω̃ν θυσίας κατὰ τὸν ἀριθμὸν αὐτω̃ν καὶ μόσχον ἕνα περὶ ἁμαρτίας περὶ τω̃ν ψυχω̃ν αὐτω̃ν ἔλεγεν γὰρ Ιωβ μήποτε οἱ υἱοί μου ἐν τη̨̃ διανοία̨ αὐτω̃ν κακὰ ἐνενόησαν πρὸς θεόν οὕτως οὐ̃ν ἐποίει Ιωβ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας (Ⅲ)

- Cumque in orbem transissent dies convivii, mittebat ad eos Job, et sanctificabat illos : consurgensque diluculo, offerebat holocausta pro singulis. Dicebat enim : Ne forte peccaverint filii mei, et benedixerint Deo in cordibus suis. Sic faciebat Job cunctis diebus.\ (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 5 ׃1 ויהי כי הקיפו ימי המשתה וישלח איוב ויקדשם והשכים בבקר והעלה עלות מספר כלם כי אמר איוב אולי חטאו בני וברכו אלהים בלבבם ככה יעשה איוב כל הימים פ‬ (Ⅴ)

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

- Or, les fils de Dieu vinrent un jour se présenter devant l'Éternel, et Satan vint aussi au milieu d'eux. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη καὶ ἰδοὺ ἠ̃λθον οἱ ἄγγελοι του̃ θεου̃ παραστη̃ναι ἐνώπιον του̃ κυρίου καὶ ὁ διάβολος ἠ̃λθεν μετ' αὐτω̃ν (Ⅲ)

- Quadam autem die, cum venissent filii Dei ut assisterent coram Domino, affuit inter eos etiam Satan. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 6 ׃1 ויהי היום ויבאו בני האלהים להתיצב על יהוה ויבוא גם השטן בתוכם ‬ (Ⅴ)

And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

- L'Éternel dit à Satan: D'où viens-tu? Et Satan répondit à l'Éternel: De parcourir la terre et de m'y promener. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ εἰ̃πεν ὁ κύριος τω̨̃ διαβόλω̨ πόθεν παραγέγονας καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ διάβολος τω̨̃ κυρίω̨ εἰ̃πεν περιελθὼν τὴν γη̃ν καὶ ἐμπεριπατήσας τὴν ὑπ' οὐρανὸν πάρειμι (Ⅲ)

- Cui dixit Dominus : Unde venis ? Qui respondens, ait : Circuivi terram, et perambulavi eam. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 7 ׃1 ויאמר יהוה אל השטן מאין תבא ויען השטן את יהוה ויאמר משוט בארץ ומהתהלך בה ‬ (Ⅴ)

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

- L'Éternel dit à Satan: As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job? Il n'y a personne comme lui sur la terre; c'est un homme intègre et droit, craignant Dieu, et se détournant du mal. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ εἰ̃πεν αὐτω̨̃ ὁ κύριος προσέσχες τη̨̃ διανοία̨ σου κατὰ του̃ παιδός μου Ιωβ ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν κατ' αὐτὸν τω̃ν ἐπὶ τη̃ς γη̃ς ἄνθρωπος ἄμεμπτος ἀληθινός θεοσεβής ἀπεχόμενος ἀπὸ παντὸς πονηρου̃ πράγματος (Ⅲ)

- Dixitque Dominus ad eum : Numquid considerasti servum meum Job, quod non sit ei similis in terra, homo simplex et rectus, ac timens Deum, et recedens a malo ? (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 8 ׃1 ויאמר יהוה אל השטן השמת לבך על עבדי איוב כי אין כמהו בארץ איש תם וישר ירא אלהים וסר מרע ‬ (Ⅴ)

Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

- Et Satan répondit à l'Éternel: Est-ce d'une manière désintéressée que Job craint Dieu? (Ⅱ)

- ἀπεκρίθη δὲ ὁ διάβολος καὶ εἰ̃πεν ἐναντίον του̃ κυρίου μὴ δωρεὰν σέβεται Ιωβ τὸν θεόν (Ⅲ)

- Cui respondens Satan, ait : Numquid Job frustra timet Deum ? (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 9 ׃1 ויען השטן את יהוה ויאמר החנם ירא איוב אלהים ‬ (Ⅴ)

Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

- Ne l'as-tu pas protégé, lui, sa maison, et tout ce qui est à lui? Tu as béni l'oeuvre de ses mains, et ses troupeaux couvrent le pays. (Ⅱ)

- οὐ σὺ περιέφραξας τὰ ἔξω αὐτου̃ καὶ τὰ ἔσω τη̃ς οἰκίας αὐτου̃ καὶ τὰ ἔξω πάντων τω̃ν ὄντων αὐτω̨̃ κύκλω̨ τὰ ἔργα τω̃ν χειρω̃ν αὐτου̃ εὐλόγησας καὶ τὰ κτήνη αὐτου̃ πολλὰ ἐποίησας ἐπὶ τη̃ς γη̃ς (Ⅲ)

- nonne tu vallasti eum, ac domum ejus, universamque substantiam per circuitum ; operibus manuum ejus benedixisti, et possessio ejus crevit in terra ? (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 10 ׃1 הלא *את **אתה שכת בעדו ובעד ביתו ובעד כל אשר לו מסביב מעשה ידיו ברכת ומקנהו פרץ בארץ ‬ (Ⅴ)

But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

- Mais étends ta main, touche à tout ce qui lui appartient, et je suis sûr qu'il te maudit en face. (Ⅱ)

- ἀλλὰ ἀπόστειλον τὴν χει̃ρά σου καὶ ἅψαι πάντων ὡ̃ν ἔχει εἰ μὴν εἰς πρόσωπόν σε εὐλογήσει (Ⅲ)

- sed extende paululum manum tuam et tange cuncta quæ possidet, nisi in faciem benedixerit tibi. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 11 ׃1 ואולם שלח נא ידך וגע בכל אשר לו אם לא על פניך יברכך ‬ (Ⅴ)

And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

- L'Éternel dit à Satan: Voici, tout ce qui lui appartient, je te le livre; seulement, ne porte pas la main sur lui. Et Satan se retira de devant la face de l'Éternel. (Ⅱ)

- τότε εἰ̃πεν ὁ κύριος τω̨̃ διαβόλω̨ ἰδοὺ πάντα ὅσα ἔστιν αὐτω̨̃ δίδωμι ἐν τη̨̃ χειρί σου ἀλλὰ αὐτου̃ μὴ ἅψη̨ καὶ ἐξη̃λθεν ὁ διάβολος παρὰ του̃ κυρίου (Ⅲ)

- Dixit ergo Dominus ad Satan : Ecce universa quæ habet in manu tua sunt : tantum in eum ne extendas manum tuam. Egressusque est Satan a facie Domini. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 12 ׃1 ויאמר יהוה אל השטן הנה כל אשר לו בידך רק אליו אל תשלח ידך ויצא השטן מעם פני יהוה ‬ (Ⅴ)

And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

- Un jour que les fils et les filles de Job mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné, (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἠ̃ν ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη οἱ υἱοὶ Ιωβ καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες αὐτου̃ ἔπινον οἰ̃νον ἐν τη̨̃ οἰκία̨ του̃ ἀδελφου̃ αὐτω̃ν του̃ πρεσβυτέρου (Ⅲ)

- Cum autem quadam die filii et filiæ ejus comederent et biberent vinum in domo fratris sui primogeniti, (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 13 ׃1 ויהי היום ובניו ובנתיו אכלים ושתים יין בבית אחיהם הבכור ‬ (Ⅴ)

And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:

- il arriva auprès de Job un messager qui dit: Les boeufs labouraient et les ânesses paissaient à côté d'eux; (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος ἠ̃λθεν πρὸς Ιωβ καὶ εἰ̃πεν αὐτω̨̃ τὰ ζεύγη τω̃ν βοω̃ν ἠροτρία καὶ αἱ θήλειαι ὄνοι ἐβόσκοντο ἐχόμεναι αὐτω̃ν (Ⅲ)

- nuntius venit ad Job, qui diceret : Boves arabant, et asinæ pascebantur juxta eos : (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 14 ׃1 ומלאך בא אל איוב ויאמר הבקר היו חרשות והאתנות רעות על ידיהם ‬ (Ⅴ)

And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

- des Sabéens se sont jetés dessus, les ont enlevés, et ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée. Et je me suis échappé moi seul, pour t'en apporter la nouvelle. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ αἰχμαλωτεύοντες ἠ̨χμαλώτευσαν αὐτὰς καὶ τοὺς παι̃δας ἀπέκτειναν ἐν μαχαίραις σωθεὶς δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος ἠ̃λθον του̃ ἀπαγγει̃λαί σοι (Ⅲ)

- et irruerunt Sabæi, tuleruntque omnia, et pueros percusserunt gladio : et evasi ego solus, ut nuntiarem tibi. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 15 ׃1 ותפל שבא ותקחם ואת הנערים הכו לפי חרב ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך ‬ (Ⅴ)

While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

- Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit: Le feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel, a embrasé les brebis et les serviteurs, et les a consumés. Et je me suis échappé moi seul, pour t'en apporter la nouvelle. (Ⅱ)

- ἔτι τούτου λαλου̃ντος ἠ̃λθεν ἕτερος ἄγγελος καὶ εἰ̃πεν πρὸς Ιωβ πυ̃ρ ἔπεσεν ἐκ του̃ οὐρανου̃ καὶ κατέκαυσεν τὰ πρόβατα καὶ τοὺς ποιμένας κατέφαγεν ὁμοίως καὶ σωθεὶς ἐγὼ μόνος ἠ̃λθον του̃ ἀπαγγει̃λαί σοι (Ⅲ)

- Cumque adhuc ille loqueretur, venit alter, et dixit : Ignis Dei cecidit e cælo, et tactas oves puerosque consumpsit : et effugi ego solus, ut nuntiarem tibi. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 16 ׃1 עוד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר אש אלהים נפלה מן השמים ותבער בצאן ובנערים ותאכלם ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך ‬ (Ⅴ)

While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

- Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit: Des Chaldéens, formés en trois bandes, se sont jetés sur les chameaux, les ont enlevés, et ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée. Et je me suis échappé moi seul, pour t'en apporter la nouvelle. (Ⅱ)

- ἔτι τούτου λαλου̃ντος ἠ̃λθεν ἕτερος ἄγγελος καὶ εἰ̃πεν πρὸς Ιωβ οἱ ἱππει̃ς ἐποίησαν ἡμι̃ν κεφαλὰς τρει̃ς καὶ ἐκύκλωσαν τὰς καμήλους καὶ ἠ̨χμαλώτευσαν αὐτὰς καὶ τοὺς παι̃δας ἀπέκτειναν ἐν μαχαίραις ἐσώθην δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος καὶ ἠ̃λθον του̃ ἀπαγγει̃λαί σοι (Ⅲ)

- Sed et illo adhuc loquente, venit alius, et dixit : Chaldæi fecerunt tres turmas, et invaserunt camelos, et tulerunt eos, necnon et pueros percusserunt gladio : et ego fugi solus, ut nuntiarem tibi. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 17 ׃1 עוד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר כשדים שמו שלשה ראשים ויפשטו על הגמלים ויקחום ואת הנערים הכו לפי חרב ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך ‬ (Ⅴ)

While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

- Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit: Tes fils et tes filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné; (Ⅱ)

- ἔτι τούτου λαλου̃ντος ἄλλος ἄγγελος ἔρχεται λέγων τω̨̃ Ιωβ τω̃ν υἱω̃ν σου καὶ τω̃ν θυγατέρων σου ἐσθιόντων καὶ πινόντων παρὰ τω̨̃ ἀδελφω̨̃ αὐτω̃ν τω̨̃ πρεσβυτέρω̨ (Ⅲ)

- Adhuc loquebatur ille, et ecce alius intravit, et dixit : Filiis tuis et filiabus vescentibus et bibentibus vinum in domo fratris sui primogeniti, (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 18 ׃1 עד זה מדבר וזה בא ויאמר בניך ובנותיך אכלים ושתים יין בבית אחיהם הבכור ‬ (Ⅴ)

And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

- et voici, un grand vent est venu de l'autre côté du désert, et a frappé contre les quatre coins de la maison; elle s'est écroulée sur les jeunes gens, et ils sont morts. Et je me suis échappé moi seul, pour t'en apporter la nouvelle. (Ⅱ)

- ἐξαίφνης πνευ̃μα μέγα ἐπη̃λθεν ἐκ τη̃ς ἐρήμου καὶ ἥψατο τω̃ν τεσσάρων γωνιω̃ν τη̃ς οἰκίας καὶ ἔπεσεν ἡ οἰκία ἐπὶ τὰ παιδία σου καὶ ἐτελεύτησαν ἐσώθην δὲ ἐγὼ μόνος καὶ ἠ̃λθον του̃ ἀπαγγει̃λαί σοι (Ⅲ)

- repente ventus vehemens irruit a regione deserti, et concussit quatuor angulos domus : quæ corruens oppressit liberos tuos, et mortui sunt : et effugi ego solus, ut nuntiarem tibi. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 19 ׃1 והנה רוח גדולה באה מעבר המדבר ויגע בארבע פנות הבית ויפל על הנערים וימותו ואמלטה רק אני לבדי להגיד לך ‬ (Ⅴ)

Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

- Alors Job se leva, déchira son manteau, et se rasa la tête; puis, se jetant par terre, il se prosterna, (Ⅱ)

- οὕτως ἀναστὰς Ιωβ διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτου̃ καὶ ἐκείρατο τὴν κόμην τη̃ς κεφαλη̃ς αὐτου̃ καὶ πεσὼν χαμαὶ προσεκύνησεν καὶ εἰ̃πεν (Ⅲ)

- Tunc surrexit Job, et scidit vestimenta sua : et tonso capite corruens in terram, adoravit, (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 20 ׃1 ויקם איוב ויקרע את מעלו ויגז את ראשו ויפל ארצה וישתחו ‬ (Ⅴ)

And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

- et dit: Je suis sorti nu du sein de ma mère, et nu je retournerai dans le sein de la terre. L'Éternel a donné, et l'Éternel a ôté; que le nom de l'Éternel soit béni! (Ⅱ)

- αὐτὸς γυμνὸς ἐξη̃λθον ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός μου γυμνὸς καὶ ἀπελεύσομαι ἐκει̃ ὁ κύριος ἔδωκεν ὁ κύριος ἀφείλατο ὡς τω̨̃ κυρίω̨ ἔδοξεν οὕτως καὶ ἐγένετο εἴη τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου εὐλογημένον (Ⅲ)

- et dixit : Nudus egressus sum de utero matris meæ, et nudus revertar illuc. Dominus dedit, Dominus abstulit ; sicut Domino placuit, ita factum est. Sit nomen Domini benedictum. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 21 ׃1 ויאמר ערם *יצתי **יצאתי מבטן אמי וערם אשוב שמה‪[1]‬ יהוה נתן ויהוה לקח יהי שם יהוה מברך ‬ (Ⅴ)

In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

- En tout cela, Job ne pécha point et n'attribua rien d'injuste à Dieu. (Ⅱ)

- ἐν τούτοις πα̃σιν τοι̃ς συμβεβηκόσιν αὐτω̨̃ οὐδὲν ἥμαρτεν Ιωβ ἐναντίον του̃ κυρίου καὶ οὐκ ἔδωκεν ἀφροσύνην τω̨̃ θεω̨̃ (Ⅲ)

- In omnibus his non peccavit Job labiis suis, neque stultum quid contra Deum locutus est. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 22 ׃1 בכל זאת לא חטא איוב ולא נתן תפלה לאלהים פ‬ (Ⅴ)
