5. 1  
Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.
- Prends garde à ton pied, lorsque tu entres dans la maison de Dieu; approche-toi pour écouter, plutôt que pour offrir le sacrifice des insensés, car ils ne savent pas qu'ils font mal. (Ⅱ)
- φύλαξον πόδα σου ἐν ὡ̨̃ ἐὰν πορεύη̨ εἰς οἰ̃κον του̃ θεου̃ καὶ ἐγγὺς του̃ ἀκούειν ὑπὲρ δόμα τω̃ν ἀφρόνων θυσία σου ὅτι οὔκ εἰσιν εἰδότες του̃ ποιη̃σαι κακόν (Ⅲ)
- Custodi pedem tuum ingrediens domum Dei,/ et appropinqua ut audias./ Multo enim melior est obedientia quam stultorum victimæ,/ qui nesciunt quid faciunt mali.] (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 17 ׃4   שמר *רגליך **רגלך כאשר תלך אל בית האלהים וקרוב לשמע מתת הכסילים זבח כי אינם יודעים לעשות רע ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 2  
Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
- Ne te presse pas d'ouvrir la bouche, et que ton coeur ne se hâte pas d'exprimer une parole devant Dieu; car Dieu est au ciel, et toi sur la terre: que tes paroles soient donc peu nombreuses. (Ⅱ)
- μὴ σπευ̃δε ἐπὶ στόματί σου καὶ καρδία σου μὴ ταχυνάτω του̃ ἐξενέγκαι λόγον πρὸ προσώπου του̃ θεου̃ ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἐν τω̨̃ οὐρανω̨̃ καὶ σὺ ἐπὶ τη̃ς γη̃ς ἐπὶ τούτω̨ ἔστωσαν οἱ λόγοι σου ὀλίγοι (Ⅲ)
- Ne temere quid loquaris,/ neque cor tuum sit velox ad proferendum sermonem coram Deo./ Deus enim in cælo, et tu super terram ;/ idcirco sint pauci sermones tui./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 1  ׃5   אל תבהל על פיך ולבך אל ימהר להוציא דבר לפני האלהים כי האלהים בשמים ואתה על הארץ על כן‪[C]‬ יהיו דבריך מעטים ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 3  
For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words.
- Car, si les songes naissent de la multitude des occupations, la voix de l'insensé se fait entendre dans la multitude des paroles. (Ⅱ)
- ὅτι παραγίνεται ἐνύπνιον ἐν πλήθει περισπασμου̃ καὶ φωνὴ ἄφρονος ἐν πλήθει λόγων (Ⅲ)
- Multas curas sequuntur somnia,/ et in multis sermonibus invenietur stultitia./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 2  ׃5   כי בא החלום ברב ענין וקול כסיל ברב דברים ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 4  
When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.
- Lorsque tu as fait un voeu à Dieu, ne tarde pas à l'accomplir, car il n'aime pas les insensés: accomplis le voeu que tu as fait. (Ⅱ)
- καθὼς ἂν εὔξη̨ εὐχὴν τω̨̃ θεω̨̃ μὴ χρονίση̨ς του̃ ἀποδου̃ναι αὐτήν ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν θέλημα ἐν ἄφροσιν σὺν ὅσα ἐὰν εὔξη̨ ἀπόδος (Ⅲ)
- Si quid vovisti Deo,/ ne moreris reddere :/ displicet enim ei infidelis et stulta promissio,/ sed quodcumque voveris redde :/ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 3  ׃5   כאשר תדר נדר לאלהים אל תאחר לשלמו כי אין חפץ בכסילים את אשר תדר שלם ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 5  
Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
- Mieux vaut pour toi ne point faire de voeu, que d'en faire un et de ne pas l'accomplir. (Ⅱ)
- ἀγαθὸν τὸ μὴ εὔξασθαί σε ἢ τὸ εὔξασθαί σε καὶ μὴ ἀποδου̃ναι (Ⅲ)
- multoque melius est non vovere,/ quam post votum promissa non reddere./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 4  ׃5   טוב אשר לא תדר משתדור‪[Q]‬‪[n]‬‪[p]‬ ולא תשלם ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 6  
Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?
- Ne permets pas à ta bouche de faire pécher ta chair, et ne dis pas en présence de l'envoyé que c'est une inadvertance. Pourquoi Dieu s'irriterait-il de tes paroles, et détruirait-il l'ouvrage de tes mains? (Ⅱ)
- μὴ δω̨̃ς τὸ στόμα σου του̃ ἐξαμαρτη̃σαι τὴν σάρκα σου καὶ μὴ εἴπη̨ς πρὸ προσώπου του̃ θεου̃ ὅτι ἄγνοιά ἐστιν ἵνα μὴ ὀργισθη̨̃ ὁ θεὸς ἐπὶ φωνη̨̃ σου καὶ διαφθείρη̨ τὰ ποιήματα χειρω̃ν σου (Ⅲ)
- Ne dederis os tuum ut peccare facias carnem tuam,/ neque dicas coram angelo :/ Non est providentia :/ ne forte iratus Deus contra sermones tuos/ dissipet cuncta opera manuum tuarum./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 5  ׃5   אל תתן את פיך לחטיא את בשרך ואל תאמר לפני המלאך כי שגגה היא למה יקצף האלהים על קולך וחבל את מעשה ידיך ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 7  
For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.
- Car, s'il y a des vanités dans la multitude des songes, il y en a aussi dans beaucoup de paroles; c'est pourquoi, crains Dieu. (Ⅱ)
- ὅτι ἐν πλήθει ἐνυπνίων καὶ ματαιότητες καὶ λόγοι πολλοί ὅτι σὺν τὸν θεὸν φοβου̃ (Ⅲ)
- Ubi multa sunt somnia,/ plurimæ sunt vanitates, et sermones innumeri ;/ tu vero Deum time.]\ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 6  ׃5   כי ברב חלמות והבלים ודברים הרבה כי את האלהים ירא ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 8  
If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.
- Si tu vois dans une province le pauvre opprimé et la violation du droit et de la justice, ne t'en étonne point; car un homme élevé est placé sous la surveillance d'un autre plus élevé, et au-dessus d'eux il en est de plus élevés encore. (Ⅱ)
- ἐὰν συκοφαντίαν πένητος καὶ ἁρπαγὴν κρίματος καὶ δικαιοσύνης ἴδη̨ς ἐν χώρα̨ μὴ θαυμάση̨ς ἐπὶ τω̨̃ πράγματι ὅτι ὑψηλὸς ἐπάνω ὑψηλου̃ φυλάξαι καὶ ὑψηλοὶ ἐπ' αὐτούς (Ⅲ)
- Si videris calumnias egenorum, et violenta judicia,/ et subverti justitiam in provincia,/ non mireris super hoc negotio :/ quia excelso excelsior est alius,/ et super hos quoque eminentiores sunt alii ;/ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 7  ׃5   אם עשק רש וגזל משפט וצדק תראה במדינה אל תתמה על החפץ כי גבה מעל גבה‪[Q]‬‪[n]‬‪[p]‬ שמר וגבהים עליהם ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 9  
Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field.
- Un avantage pour le pays à tous égards, c'est un roi honoré du pays. (Ⅱ)
- καὶ περισσεία γη̃ς ἐν παντί ἐστι βασιλεὺς του̃ ἀγρου̃ εἰργασμένου (Ⅲ)
- et insuper universæ terræ rex imperat servienti./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 8  ׃5   ויתרון ארץ בכל *היא **הוא מלך לשדה נעבד ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 10  
He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
- Celui qui aime l'argent n'est pas rassasié par l'argent, et celui qui aime les richesses n'en profite pas. C'est encore là une vanité. (Ⅱ)
- ἀγαπω̃ν ἀργύριον οὐ πλησθήσεται ἀργυρίου καὶ τίς ἠγάπησεν ἐν πλήθει αὐτω̃ν γένημα καί γε του̃το ματαιότης (Ⅲ)
- Avarus non implebitur pecunia,/ et qui amat divitias fructum non capiet ex eis ;/ et hoc ergo vanitas./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 9  ׃5   אהב כסף לא ישבע כסף ומי אהב בהמון לא תבואה גם זה הבל ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 11  
When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?
- Quand le bien abonde, ceux qui le mangent abondent; et quel avantage en revient-il à son possesseur, sinon qu'il le voit de ses yeux? (Ⅱ)
- ἐν πλήθει τη̃ς ἀγαθωσύνης ἐπληθύνθησαν ἔσθοντες αὐτήν καὶ τί ἀνδρεία τω̨̃ παρ' αὐτη̃ς ὅτι ἀλλ' ἢ του̃ ὁρα̃ν ὀφθαλμοι̃ς αὐτου̃ (Ⅲ)
- Ubi multæ sunt opes,/ multi et qui comedunt eas./ Et quid prodest possessori,/ nisi quod cernit divitias oculis suis ?/ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 10 ׃5   ברבות הטובה רבו אוכליה ומה כשרון לבעליה כי אם *ראית **ראות עיניו ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 12  
The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.
- Le sommeil du travailleur est doux, qu'il ait peu ou beaucoup à manger; mais le rassasiement du riche ne le laisse pas dormir. (Ⅱ)
- γλυκὺς ὕπνος του̃ δούλου εἰ ὀλίγον καὶ εἰ πολὺ φάγεται καὶ τω̨̃ ἐμπλησθέντι του̃ πλουτη̃σαι οὐκ ἔστιν ἀφίων αὐτὸν του̃ ὑπνω̃σαι (Ⅲ)
- Dulcis est somnus operanti,/ sive parum sive multum comedat ;/ saturitas autem divitis non sinit eum dormire.]\ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 11 ׃5   מתוקה שנת העבד אם מעט ואם הרבה יאכל והשבע לעשיר איננו מניח לו לישון ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 13  
There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt.
- Il est un mal grave que j'ai vu sous le soleil: des richesses conservées, pour son malheur, par celui qui les possède. (Ⅱ)
- ἔστιν ἀρρωστία ἣν εἰ̃δον ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον πλου̃τον φυλασσόμενον τω̨̃ παρ' αὐτου̃ εἰς κακίαν αὐτου̃ (Ⅲ)
- Est et alia infirmitas pessima quam vidi sub sole :/ divitiæ conservatæ in malum domini sui./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 12 ׃5   יש רעה חולה ראיתי תחת השמש עשר שמור לבעליו לרעתו ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 14  
But those riches perish by evil travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand.
- Ces richesses se perdent par quelque événement fâcheux; il a engendré un fils, et il ne reste rien entre ses mains. (Ⅱ)
- καὶ ἀπολει̃ται ὁ πλου̃τος ἐκει̃νος ἐν περισπασμω̨̃ πονηρω̨̃ καὶ ἐγέννησεν υἱόν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν χειρὶ αὐτου̃ οὐδέν (Ⅲ)
- Pereunt enim in afflictione pessima :/ generavit filium qui in summa egestate erit./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 13 ׃5   ואבד העשר ההוא בענין רע והוליד בן ואין בידו מאומה ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 15  
As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.
- Comme il est sorti du ventre de sa mère, il s'en retourne nu ainsi qu'il était venu, et pour son travail n'emporte rien qu'il puisse prendre dans sa main. (Ⅱ)
- καθὼς ἐξη̃λθεν ἀπὸ γαστρὸς μητρὸς αὐτου̃ γυμνός ἐπιστρέψει του̃ πορευθη̃ναι ὡς ἥκει καὶ οὐδὲν οὐ λήμψεται ἐν μόχθω̨ αὐτου̃ ἵνα πορευθη̨̃ ἐν χειρὶ αὐτου̃ (Ⅲ)
- Sicut egressus est nudus de utero matris suæ, sic revertetur,/ et nihil auferet secum de labore suo./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 14 ׃5   כאשר יצא מבטן אמו ערום ישוב ללכת כשבא ומאומה לא ישא בעמלו שילך בידו ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 16  
And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?
- C'est encore là un mal grave. Il s'en va comme il était venu; et quel avantage lui revient-il d'avoir travaillé pour du vent? (Ⅱ)
- καί γε του̃το πονηρὰ ἀρρωστία ὥσπερ γὰρ παρεγένετο οὕτως καὶ ἀπελεύσεται καὶ τίς περισσεία αὐτω̨̃ ἡ̨̃ μοχθει̃ εἰς ἄνεμον (Ⅲ)
- Miserabilis prorsus infirmitas :/ quomodo venit, sic revertetur./ Quid ergo prodest ei quod laboravit in ventum ?/ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 15 ׃5   וגם זה רעה חולה כל עמת שבא כן ילך ומה יתרון לו שיעמל לרוח ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 17  
All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.
- De plus, toute sa vie il mange dans les ténèbres, et il a beaucoup de chagrin, de maux et d'irritation. (Ⅱ)
- καί γε πα̃σαι αἱ ἡμέραι αὐτου̃ ἐν σκότει καὶ πένθει καὶ θυμω̨̃ πολλω̨̃ καὶ ἀρρωστία̨ καὶ χόλω̨ (Ⅲ)
- cunctis diebus vitæ suæ comedit in tenebris,/ et in curis multis, et in ærumna atque tristitia.]\ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 16 ׃5   גם כל ימיו בחשך יאכל וכעס הרבה וחליו וקצף ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 18  
Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.
- Voici ce que j'ai vu: c'est pour l'homme une chose bonne et belle de manger et de boire, et de jouir du bien-être au milieu de tout le travail qu'il fait sous le soleil, pendant le nombre des jours de vie que Dieu lui a donnés; car c'est là sa part. (Ⅱ)
- ἰδοὺ ὃ εἰ̃δον ἐγὼ ἀγαθόν ὅ ἐστιν καλόν του̃ φαγει̃ν καὶ του̃ πιει̃ν καὶ του̃ ἰδει̃ν ἀγαθωσύνην ἐν παντὶ μόχθω̨ αὐτου̃ ὡ̨̃ ἐὰν μοχθη̨̃ ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον ἀριθμὸν ἡμερω̃ν ζωη̃ς αὐτου̃ ὡ̃ν ἔδωκεν αὐτω̨̃ ὁ θεός ὅτι αὐτὸ μερὶς αὐτου̃ (Ⅲ)
- Hoc itaque visum est mihi bonum,/ ut comedat quis et bibat,/ et fruatur lætitia ex labore suo/ quo laboravit ipse sub sole,/ numero dierum vitæ suæ/ quos dedit ei Deus ;/ et hæc est pars illius./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 17 ׃5   הנה אשר ראיתי אני טוב אשר יפה לאכול ולשתות ולראות טובה בכל עמלו שיעמל תחת השמש מספר ימי *חיו **חייו‪[Q]‬‪[q]‬ אשר נתן לו האלהים כי הוא חלקו ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 19  
Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.
- Mais, si Dieu a donné à un homme des richesses et des biens, s'il l'a rendu maître d'en manger, d'en prendre sa part, et de se réjouir au milieu de son travail, c'est là un don de Dieu. (Ⅱ)
- καί γε πα̃ς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὡ̨̃ ἔδωκεν αὐτω̨̃ ὁ θεὸς πλου̃τον καὶ ὑπάρχοντα καὶ ἐξουσίασεν αὐτὸν του̃ φαγει̃ν ἀπ' αὐτου̃ καὶ του̃ λαβει̃ν τὸ μέρος αὐτου̃ καὶ του̃ εὐφρανθη̃ναι ἐν μόχθω̨ αὐτου̃ του̃το δόμα θεου̃ ἐστιν (Ⅲ)
- Et omni homini cui dedit Deus divitias atque substantiam,/ potestatemque ei tribuit ut comedat ex eis,/ et fruatur parte sua, et lætetur de labore suo :/ hoc est donum Dei./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 18 ׃5   גם כל האדם אשר נתן לו האלהים עשר ונכסים והשליטו לאכל ממנו ולשאת את חלקו ולשמח בעמלו זה מתת אלהים היא ‬ (Ⅴ)
5. 20  
For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.
- Car il ne se souviendra pas beaucoup des jours de sa vie, parce que Dieu répand la joie dans son coeur. (Ⅱ)
- ὅτι οὐ πολλὰ μνησθήσεται τὰς ἡμέρας τη̃ς ζωη̃ς αὐτου̃ ὅτι ὁ θεὸς περισπα̨̃ αὐτὸν ἐν εὐφροσύνη̨ καρδίας αὐτου̃ (Ⅲ)
- Non enim satis recordabitur dierum vitæ suæ,/ eo quod Deus occupet deliciis cor ejus.] (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 19 ׃5   כי לא הרבה יזכר את ימי חייו כי האלהים מענה בשמחת לבו ‬ (Ⅴ)
