Paroles de l'Ecclésiaste, fils de David, roi de Jérusalem.

Vanité des vanités, dit l'Ecclésiaste, vanité des vanités, tout est vanité.
- Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. (Ⅱ)
- ματαιότης ματαιοτήτων εἰ̃πεν ὁ 'Εκκλησιαστής ματαιότης ματαιοτήτων τὰ πάντα ματαιότης (Ⅲ)
- Vanitas vanitatum, dixit Ecclesiastes ;/ vanitas vanitatum, et omnia vanitas./ (Ⅳ)

Quel avantage revient-il à l'homme de toute la peine qu'il se donne sous le soleil?
- What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? (Ⅱ)
- τίς περισσεία τω̨̃ ἀνθρώπω̨ ἐν παντὶ μόχθω̨ αὐτου̃ ὡ̨̃ μοχθει̃ ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον (Ⅲ)
- Quid habet amplius homo/ de universo labore suo quo laborat sub sole ?]\ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 3  ׃1   מה יתרון לאדם בכל עמלו שיעמל תחת השמש ‬ (Ⅴ)

Une génération s'en va, une autre vient, et la terre subsiste toujours.
- One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. (Ⅱ)
- γενεὰ πορεύεται καὶ γενεὰ ἔρχεται καὶ ἡ γη̃ εἰς τὸν αἰω̃να ἕστηκεν (Ⅲ)
- Generatio præterit, et generatio advenit ;/ terra autem in æternum stat./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 4  ׃1   דור הלך ודור בא והארץ לעולם עמדת ‬ (Ⅴ)

Le soleil se lève, le soleil se couche; il soupire après le lieu d'où il se lève de nouveau.
- The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. (Ⅱ)
- καὶ ἀνατέλλει ὁ ἥλιος καὶ δύνει ὁ ἥλιος καὶ εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτου̃ ἕλκει (Ⅲ)
- Oritur sol et occidit,/ et ad locum suum revertitur ;/ ibique renascens, (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 5  ׃1   וזרח השמש ובא השמש ואל מקומו שואף זורח הוא שם ‬ (Ⅴ)

Le vent se dirige vers le midi, tourne vers le nord; puis il tourne encore, et reprend les mêmes circuits.
- The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. (Ⅱ)
- ἀνατέλλων αὐτὸς ἐκει̃ πορεύεται πρὸς νότον καὶ κυκλοι̃ πρὸς βορρα̃ν κυκλοι̃ κυκλω̃ν πορεύεται τὸ πνευ̃μα καὶ ἐπὶ κύκλους αὐτου̃ ἐπιστρέφει τὸ πνευ̃μα (Ⅲ)
- gyrat per meridiem, et flectitur ad aquilonem./ Lustrans universa in circuitu pergit spiritus,/ et in circulos suos revertitur./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 6  ׃1   הולך אל דרום וסובב אל צפון סובב סבב הולך הרוח ועל סביבתיו שב הרוח ‬ (Ⅴ)

Tous les fleuves vont à la mer, et la mer n'est point remplie; ils continuent à aller vers le lieu où ils se dirigent.
- All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. (Ⅱ)
- πάντες οἱ χείμαρροι πορεύονται εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ ἡ θάλασσα οὐκ ἔσται ἐμπιμπλαμένη εἰς τόπον οὑ̃ οἱ χείμαρροι πορεύονται ἐκει̃ αὐτοὶ ἐπιστρέφουσιν του̃ πορευθη̃ναι (Ⅲ)
- Omnia flumina intrant in mare,/ et mare non redundat ;/ ad locum unde exeunt flumina/ revertuntur ut iterum fluant./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 7  ׃1   כל הנחלים הלכים אל הים והים איננו מלא אל מקום שהנחלים הלכים שם הם שבים ללכת ‬ (Ⅴ)

Toutes choses sont en travail au delà de ce qu'on peut dire; l'oeil ne se rassasie pas de voir, et l'oreille ne se lasse pas d'entendre.
- All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. (Ⅱ)
- πάντες οἱ λόγοι ἔγκοποι οὐ δυνήσεται ἀνὴρ του̃ λαλει̃ν καὶ οὐκ ἐμπλησθήσεται ὀφθαλμὸς του̃ ὁρα̃ν καὶ οὐ πληρωθήσεται οὐ̃ς ἀπὸ ἀκροάσεως (Ⅲ)
- Cunctæ res difficiles ;/ non potest eas homo explicare sermone./ Non saturatur oculus visu,/ nec auris auditu impletur./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 8  ׃1   כל הדברים יגעים לא יוכל איש לדבר לא תשבע עין לראות ולא תמלא אזן משמע ‬ (Ⅴ)

Ce qui a été, c'est ce qui sera, et ce qui s'est fait, c'est ce qui se fera, il n'y a rien de nouveau sous le soleil.
- The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. (Ⅱ)
- τί τὸ γεγονός αὐτὸ τὸ γενησόμενον καὶ τί τὸ πεποιημένον αὐτὸ τὸ ποιηθησόμενον καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν πα̃ν πρόσφατον ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον (Ⅲ)
- Quid est quod fuit ? Ipsum quod futurum est./ Quid est quod factum est ? Ipsum quod faciendum est./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 9  ׃1   מה שהיה הוא שיהיה ומה שנעשה הוא שיעשה ואין כל חדש תחת השמש ‬ (Ⅴ)

S'il est une chose dont on dise: Vois ceci, c'est nouveau! cette chose existait déjà dans les siècles qui nous ont précédés.
- Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. (Ⅱ)
- ὃς λαλήσει καὶ ἐρει̃ ἰδὲ του̃το καινόν ἐστιν ἤδη γέγονεν ἐν τοι̃ς αἰω̃σιν τοι̃ς γενομένοις ἀπὸ ἔμπροσθεν ἡμω̃ν (Ⅲ)
- Nihil sub sole novum,/ nec valet quisquam dicere : Ecce hoc recens est :/ jam enim præcessit in sæculis quæ fuerunt ante nos./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 10 ׃1   יש דבר שיאמר ראה זה חדש הוא כבר היה לעלמים אשר היה מלפננו ‬ (Ⅴ)

On ne se souvient pas de ce qui est ancien; et ce qui arrivera dans la suite ne laissera pas de souvenir chez ceux qui vivront plus tard.
- There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after. (Ⅱ)
- οὐκ ἔστιν μνήμη τοι̃ς πρώτοις καί γε τοι̃ς ἐσχάτοις γενομένοις οὐκ ἔσται αὐτοι̃ς μνήμη μετὰ τω̃ν γενησομένων εἰς τὴν ἐσχάτην (Ⅲ)
- Non est priorum memoria ;/ sed nec eorum quidem quæ postea futura sunt/ erit recordatio apud eos qui futuri sunt in novissimo.]\ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 11 ׃1   אין זכרון לראשנים וגם לאחרנים שיהיו לא יהיה להם זכרון עם שיהיו לאחרנה פ‬ (Ⅴ)

Moi, l'Ecclésiaste, j'ai été roi d'Israël à Jérusalem.
- I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. (Ⅱ)
- ἐγὼ 'Εκκλησιαστὴς ἐγενόμην βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ Ισραηλ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ (Ⅲ)
- Ego Ecclesiastes fui rex Israël in Jerusalem ;/ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 12 ׃1   אני קהלת הייתי מלך על ישראל בירושלם ‬ (Ⅴ)

J'ai appliqué mon coeur à rechercher et à sonder par la sagesse tout ce qui se fait sous les cieux: c'est là une occupation pénible, à laquelle Dieu soumet les fils de l'homme.
- And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith. (Ⅱ)
- καὶ ἔδωκα τὴν καρδίαν μου του̃ ἐκζητη̃σαι καὶ του̃ κατασκέψασθαι ἐν τη̨̃ σοφία̨ περὶ πάντων τω̃ν γινομένων ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανόν ὅτι περισπασμὸν πονηρὸν ἔδωκεν ὁ θεὸς τοι̃ς υἱοι̃ς του̃ ἀνθρώπου του̃ περισπα̃σθαι ἐν αὐτω̨̃ (Ⅲ)
- et proposui in animo meo quærere et investigare sapienter/ de omnibus quæ fiunt sub sole./ Hanc occupationem pessimam/ dedit Deus filiis hominum, ut occuparentur in ea./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 13 ׃1   ונתתי את לבי לדרוש ולתור בחכמה על כל אשר נעשה תחת השמים הוא ענין רע נתן אלהים לבני האדם לענות בו ‬ (Ⅴ)

J'ai vu tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil; et voici, tout est vanité et poursuite du vent.
- I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. (Ⅱ)
- εἰ̃δον σὺν πάντα τὰ ποιήματα τὰ πεποιημένα ὑπὸ τὸν ἥλιον καὶ ἰδοὺ τὰ πάντα ματαιότης καὶ προαίρεσις πνεύματος (Ⅲ)
- Vidi cuncta quæ fiunt sub sole,/ et ecce universa vanitas et afflictio spiritus./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 14 ׃1   ראיתי את כל המעשים שנעשו תחת השמש והנה הכל הבל ורעות רוח ‬ (Ⅴ)

Ce qui est courbé ne peut se redresser, et ce qui manque ne peut être compté.
- That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered. (Ⅱ)
- διεστραμμένον οὐ δυνήσεται του̃ ἐπικοσμηθη̃ναι καὶ ὑστέρημα οὐ δυνήσεται του̃ ἀριθμηθη̃ναι (Ⅲ)
- Perversi difficile corriguntur,/ et stultorum infinitus est numerus./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 15 ׃1   מעות לא יוכל לתקן וחסרון לא יוכל להמנות ‬ (Ⅴ)

J'ai dit en mon coeur: Voici, j'ai grandi et surpassé en sagesse tous ceux qui ont dominé avant moi sur Jérusalem, et mon coeur a vu beaucoup de sagesse et de science.
- I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge. (Ⅱ)
- ἐλάλησα ἐγὼ ἐν καρδία̨ μου τω̨̃ λέγειν ἐγὼ ἰδοὺ ἐμεγαλύνθην καὶ προσέθηκα σοφίαν ἐπὶ πα̃σιν οἳ ἐγένοντο ἔμπροσθέν μου ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ καρδία μου εἰ̃δεν πολλά σοφίαν καὶ γνω̃σιν (Ⅲ)
- Locutus sum in corde meo, dicens :/ Ecce magnus effectus sum, et præcessi omnes sapientia/ qui fuerunt ante me in Jerusalem ;/ et mens mea contemplata est multa sapienter, et didici./ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 16 ׃1   דברתי אני עם לבי לאמר אני הנה הגדלתי והוספתי חכמה על כל אשר היה לפני על ירושלם ולבי ראה הרבה חכמה ודעת ‬ (Ⅴ)

J'ai appliqué mon coeur à connaître la sagesse, et à connaître la sottise et la folie; j'ai compris que cela aussi c'est la poursuite du vent.
- And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit. (Ⅱ)
- καὶ ἔδωκα καρδίαν μου του̃ γνω̃ναι σοφίαν καὶ γνω̃σιν παραβολὰς καὶ ἐπιστήμην ἔγνων ὅτι καί γε του̃τ' ἔστιν προαίρεσις πνεύματος (Ⅲ)
- Dedique cor meum ut scirem prudentiam atque doctrinam,/ erroresque et stultitiam ;/ et agnovi quod in his quoque esset labor et afflictio spiritus :/ (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 17 ׃1   ואתנה לבי לדעת חכמה ודעת הוללות ושכלות ידעתי שגם זה הוא רעיון רוח ‬ (Ⅴ)

Car avec beaucoup de sagesse on a beaucoup de chagrin, et celui qui augmente sa science augmente sa douleur.
- For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow. (Ⅱ)
- ὅτι ἐν πλήθει σοφίας πλη̃θος γνώσεως καὶ ὁ προστιθεὶς γνω̃σιν προσθήσει ἄλγημα (Ⅲ)
- eo quod in multa sapientia multa sit indignatio ;/ et qui addit scientiam, addit et laborem.] (Ⅳ)
- ‫ 18 ׃1   כי ברב חכמה רב כעס ויוסיף דעת יוסיף מכאוב ‬ (Ⅴ)
