The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!

Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.
- Les chacals mêmes présentent la mamelle, Et allaitent leurs petits; Mais la fille de mon peuple est devenue cruelle Comme les autruches du désert. The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.
- La langue du nourrisson s'attache à son palais, Desséchée par la soif; Les enfants demandent du pain, Et personne ne leur en donne. They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.
- Ceux qui se nourrissaient de mets délicats Périssent dans les rues; Ceux qui étaient élevés dans la pourpre Embrassent les fumiers. (Ⅱ) - οἱ ἔσθοντες τὰς τρυφὰς ἠφανίσθησαν ἐν ται̃ς ἐξόδοις οἱ τιθηνούμενοι ἐπὶ κόκκων περιεβάλοντο κοπρίας (Ⅲ) - Qui vescebantur voluptuose,/ interierunt in viis ;/ qui nutriebantur in croceis,/ amplexati sunt stercora./ (Ⅳ) - 5 ׃4 האכלים למעדנים נשמו בחוצות האמנים עלי תולע חבקו אשפתות ס (Ⅴ)

For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her.
- Le châtiment de la fille de mon peuple est plus grand Que celui de Sodome, Détruite en un instant, Sans que personne ait porté la main sur elle. Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire:
- Ses princes étaient plus éclatants que la neige, Plus blancs que le lait; Ils avaient le teint plus vermeil que le corail; Leur figure était comme le saphir. Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.
- Leur aspect est plus sombre que le noir; On ne les reconnaît pas dans les rues; Ils ont la peau collée sur les os, Sèche comme du bois. They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.
- Ceux qui périssent par l'épée sont plus heureux Que ceux qui périssent par la faim, Qui tombent exténués, Privés du fruit des champs. The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.
- Les femmes, malgré leur tendresse, Font cuire leurs enfants; Ils leur servent de nourriture, Au milieu du désastre de la fille de mon peuple. The LORD hath accomplished his fury; he hath poured out his fierce anger, and hath kindled a fire in Zion, and it hath devoured the foundations thereof.
- L'Éternel a épuisé sa fureur, Il a répandu son ardente colère; Il a allumé dans Sion un feu Qui en dévore les fondements. The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.
- Les rois de la terre n'auraient pas cru, Aucun des habitants du monde n'aurait cru Que l'adversaire, que l'ennemi entrerait Dans les portes de Jérusalem. (Ⅱ) - οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν βασιλει̃ς γη̃ς πάντες οἱ κατοικου̃ντες τὴν οἰκουμένην ὅτι εἰσελεύσεται ἐχθρὸς καὶ ἐκθλίβων διὰ τω̃ν πυλω̃ν Ιερουσαλημ (Ⅲ) - Non crediderunt reges terræ,/ et universi habitatores orbis,/ quoniam ingrederetur hostis et inimicus/ per portas Jerusalem./ (Ⅳ) - 12 ׃4 לא האמינו מלכי ארץ *וכל **כל ישבי תבל כי יבא צר ואויב בשערי ירושלם ס (Ⅴ)

For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her,
- Voilà le fruit des péchés de ses prophètes, Des iniquités de ses sacrificateurs, Qui ont répandu dans son sein Le sang des justes! (Ⅱ) - ἐξ ἁμαρτιω̃ν προφητω̃ν αὐτη̃ς ἀδικιω̃ν ἱερέων αὐτη̃ς τω̃ν ἐκχεόντων αἱ̃μα δίκαιον ἐν μέσω̨ αὐτη̃ς (Ⅲ) - Propter peccata prophetarum ejus,/ et iniquitates sacerdotum ejus,/ qui effuderunt in medio ejus/ sanguinem justorum./ (Ⅳ) - 13 ׃4 מחטאת נביאיה עונות כהניה השפכים בקרבה דם צדיקים ס (Ⅴ)

They have wandered as blind men in the streets, they have polluted themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments.

(Ⅱ) - ἐσαλεύθησαν ἐγρήγοροι αὐτη̃ς ἐν ται̃ς ἐξόδοις ἐμολύνθησαν ἐν αἵματι ἐν τω̨̃ μὴ δύνασθαι αὐτοὺς ἥψαντο ἐνδυμάτων αὐτω̃ν (Ⅲ) - Erraverunt cæci in plateis,/ polluti sunt in sanguine ;/ cumque non possent,/ tenuerunt lacinias suas./ (Ⅳ) - 14 ׃4 נעו עורים בחוצות נגאלו בדם בלא יוכלו יגעו בלבשיהם ס (Ⅴ)

They cried unto them, Depart ye; it is unclean; depart, depart, touch not: when they fled away and wandered, they said among the heathen, They shall no more sojourn there.
- Éloignez-vous, impurs! leur criait-on, Éloignez-vous, éloignez-vous, ne nous touchez pas! Ils sont en fuite, ils errent çà et là; On dit parmi les nations: Ils n'auront plus leur demeure! The anger of the LORD hath divided them; he will no more regard them: they respected not the persons of the priests, they favoured not the elders.
- L'Éternel les a dispersés dans sa colère, Il ne tourne plus les regards vers eux; On n'a eu ni respect pour les sacrificateurs, Ni pitié pour les vieillards. As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us.

They hunt our steps, that we cannot go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.
- On épiait nos pas, Pour nous empêcher d'aller sur nos places; Notre fin s'approchait, nos jours étaient accomplis... Notre fin est arrivée! (Ⅱ) - ἐθηρεύσαμεν μικροὺς ἡμω̃ν του̃ μὴ πορεύεσθαι ἐν ται̃ς πλατείαις ἡμω̃ν ἤγγικεν ὁ καιρὸς ἡμω̃ν ἐπληρώθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι ἡμω̃ν πάρεστιν ὁ καιρὸς ἡμω̃ν (Ⅲ) - Lubricaverunt vestigia nostra/ in itinere platearum nostrarum ;/ appropinquavit finis noster, completi sunt dies nostri,/ quia venit finis noster./ (Ⅳ) - 18 ׃4 צדו צעדינו מלכת ברחבתינו קרב קצינו מלאו ימינו כי בא קצינו ס (Ⅴ)

Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven: they pursued us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.
- Nos persécuteurs étaient plus légers Que les aigles du ciel; Ils nous ont poursuivis sur les montagnes, Ils nous ont dressé des embûches dans le désert. (Ⅱ) - κου̃φοι ἐγένοντο οἱ διώκοντες ἡμα̃ς ὑπὲρ ἀετοὺς οὐρανου̃ ἐπὶ τω̃ν ὀρέων ἐξήφθησαν ἐν ἐρήμω̨ ἐνήδρευσαν ἡμα̃ς (Ⅲ) - Velociores fuerunt persecutores nostri/ aquilis cæli ;/ super montes persecuti sunt nos,/ in deserto insidiati sunt nobis./ (Ⅳ) - 19 ׃4 קלים היו רדפינו מנשרי שמים על ההרים דלקנו במדבר ארבו לנו ס (Ⅴ)

The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, was taken in their pits, of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen.
- Celui qui nous faisait respirer, l'oint de l'Éternel, A été pris dans leurs fosses, Lui de qui nous disions: Nous vivrons sous son ombre parmi les nations. Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup also shall pass through unto thee: thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked.
- Réjouis-toi, tressaille d'allégresse, fille d'Édom, Habitante du pays d'Uts! Vers toi aussi passera la coupe; Tu t'enivreras, et tu seras mise à nu. (Ⅱ) - χαι̃ρε καὶ εὐφραίνου θύγατερ Ιδουμαίας ἡ κατοικου̃σα ἐπὶ γη̃ς καί γε ἐπὶ σὲ διελεύσεται τὸ ποτήριον κυρίου καὶ μεθυσθήση̨ καὶ ἀποχεει̃ς (Ⅲ) - Gaude et lætare, filia Edom,/ quæ habitas in terra Hus !/ ad te quoque perveniet calix : inebriaberis,/ atque nudaberis./ (Ⅳ) - 21 ׃4 שישי ושמחי בת אדום *יושבתי **יושבת בארץ עוץ גם עליך תעבר כוס תשכרי ותתערי ס (Ⅴ)

The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity: he will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will discover thy sins.
- Fille de Sion, ton iniquité est expiée; Il ne t'enverra plus en captivité. Fille d'Édom, il châtiera ton iniquité, Il mettra tes péchés à découvert. (Ⅱ) - ἐξέλιπεν ἡ ἀνομία σου θύγατερ Σιων οὐ προσθήσει ἔτι ἀποικίσαι σε ἐπεσκέψατο ἀνομίας σου θύγατερ Εδωμ ἀπεκάλυψεν ἐπὶ τὰ ἀσεβήματά σου (Ⅲ) - Completa est iniquitas tua, filia Sion :/ non addet ultra ut transmigret te./ Visitavit iniquitatem tuam, filia Edom ;/ discooperuit peccata tua.] (Ⅳ) - 22 ׃4 תם עונך בת ציון לא יוסיף להגלותך פקד עונך בת אדום גלה על חטאתיך פ (Ⅴ)
