In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
- En ce temps-là parut Jean Baptiste, prêchant dans le désert de Judée. (Ⅱ) - Ἐν δὲ ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις παραγίνεται Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστὴς κηρύσσων ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τῆς Ἰουδαίας (Ⅲ) - In diebus autem illis venit Joannes Baptista prædicans in deserto Judææ, (Ⅳ)

And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
- Il disait: Repentez-vous, car le royaume des cieux est proche. (Ⅱ) - ⸀καὶ λέγων· Μετανοεῖτε, ἤγγικεν γὰρ ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν. (Ⅲ) - et dicens : Pœnitentiam agite : appropinquavit enim regnum cælorum. (Ⅳ)

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
- Jean est celui qui avait été annoncé par Ésaïe, le prophète, lorsqu'il dit: C'est ici la voix de celui qui crie dans le désert: Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, Aplanissez ses sentiers. (Ⅱ) - οὗτος γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ῥηθεὶς ⸀διὰ Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος· Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν κυρίου, εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τὰς τρίβους αὐτοῦ. (Ⅲ) - Hic est enim, qui dictus est per Isaiam prophetam dicentem : [Vox clamantis in deserto :/ Parate viam Domini ;/ rectas facite semitas ejus.] (Ⅳ)

And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
- Jean avait un vêtement de poils de chameau, et une ceinture de cuir autour des reins. Il se nourrissait de sauterelles et de miel sauvage. (Ⅱ) - αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ Ἰωάννης εἶχεν τὸ ἔνδυμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τριχῶν καμήλου καὶ ζώνην δερματίνην περὶ τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτοῦ, ἡ δὲ τροφὴ ⸂ἦν αὐτοῦ⸃ ἀκρίδες καὶ μέλι ἄγριον. (Ⅲ) - Ipse autem Joannes habebat vestimentum de pilis camelorum, et zonam pelliceam circa lumbos suos : esca autem ejus erat locustæ, et mel silvestre. (Ⅳ)

Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
- Les habitants de Jérusalem, de toute la Judée et de tout le pays des environs du Jourdain, se rendaient auprès de lui; (Ⅱ) - τότε ἐξεπορεύετο πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ πᾶσα ἡ Ἰουδαία καὶ πᾶσα ἡ περίχωρος τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, (Ⅲ) - Tunc exibat ad eum Jerosolyma, et omnis Judæa, et omnis regio circa Jordanem ; (Ⅳ)

And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
- et, confessant leurs péchés, ils se faisaient baptiser par lui dans le fleuve du Jourdain. (Ⅱ) - καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ⸀ποταμῷ ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ ἐξομολογούμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν. (Ⅲ) - et baptizabantur ab eo in Jordane, confitentes peccata sua. (Ⅳ)

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
- Mais, voyant venir à son baptême beaucoup de pharisiens et de sadducéens, il leur dit: Races de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère à venir? (Ⅱ) - Ἰδὼν δὲ πολλοὺς τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων ἐρχομένους ἐπὶ τὸ βάπτισμα ⸀αὐτοῦ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς; (Ⅲ) - Videns autem multos pharisæorum, et sadducæorum, venientes ad baptismum suum, dixit eis : Progenies viperarum, quis demonstravit vobis fugere a ventura ira ? (Ⅳ)

Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
- Produisez donc du fruit digne de la repentance, (Ⅱ) - ποιήσατε οὖν καρπὸν ἄξιον τῆς μετανοίας (Ⅲ) - Facite ergo fructum dignum pœnitentiæ. (Ⅳ)

And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
- et ne prétendez pas dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons Abraham pour père! Car je vous déclare que de ces pierres-ci Dieu peut susciter des enfants à Abraham. (Ⅱ) - καὶ μὴ δόξητε λέγειν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς· Πατέρα ἔχομεν τὸν Ἀβραάμ, λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι δύναται ὁ θεὸς ἐκ τῶν λίθων τούτων ἐγεῖραι τέκνα τῷ Ἀβραάμ. (Ⅲ) - Et ne velitis dicere intra vos : Patrem habemus Abraham. Dico enim vobis quoniam potens est Deus de lapidibus istis suscitare filios Abrahæ. (Ⅳ)

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
- Déjà la cognée est mise à la racine des arbres: tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bons fruits sera coupé et jeté au feu. (Ⅱ) - ἤδη ⸀δὲ ἡ ἀξίνη πρὸς τὴν ῥίζαν τῶν δένδρων κεῖται· πᾶν οὖν δένδρον μὴ ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλὸν ἐκκόπτεται καὶ εἰς πῦρ βάλλεται. (Ⅲ) - Jam enim securis ad radicem arborum posita est. Omnis ergo arbor, quæ non facit fructum bonum, excidetur, et in ignem mittetur. (Ⅳ)

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
- Moi, je vous baptise d'eau, pour vous amener à la repentance; mais celui qui vient après moi est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de porter ses souliers. Lui, il vous baptisera du Saint Esprit et de feu. (Ⅱ) - Ἐγὼ μὲν ⸂ὑμᾶς βαπτίζω⸃ ἐν ὕδατι εἰς μετάνοιαν· ὁ δὲ ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἰσχυρότερός μού ἐστιν, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς τὰ ὑποδήματα βαστάσαι· αὐτὸς ὑμᾶς βαπτίσει ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ ⸂καὶ πυρί⸃· (Ⅲ) - Ego quidem baptizo vos in aqua in pœnitentiam : qui autem post me venturus est, fortior me est, cujus non sum dignus calceamenta portare : ipse vos baptizabit in Spiritu Sancto, et igni. (Ⅳ)

Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
- Il a son van à la main; il nettoiera son aire, et il amassera son blé dans le grenier, mais il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne s'éteint point. (Ⅱ) - οὗ τὸ πτύον ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ διακαθαριεῖ τὴν ἅλωνα αὐτοῦ καὶ συνάξει τὸν σῖτον αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν ⸀ἀποθήκην, τὸ δὲ ἄχυρον κατακαύσει πυρὶ ἀσβέστῳ. (Ⅲ) - Cujus ventilabrum in manu sua : et permundabit aream suam : et congregabit triticum suum in horreum, paleas autem comburet igni inextinguibili.\ (Ⅳ)

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
- Alors Jésus vint de la Galilée au Jourdain vers Jean, pour être baptisé par lui. (Ⅱ) - Τότε παραγίνεται ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰορδάνην πρὸς τὸν Ἰωάννην τοῦ βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ. (Ⅲ) - Tunc venit Jesus a Galilæa in Jordanem ad Joannem, ut baptizaretur ab eo. (Ⅳ)

But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
- Mais Jean s'y opposait, en disant: C'est moi qui ai besoin d'être baptisé par toi, et tu viens à moi! (Ⅱ) - ὁ δὲ ⸀Ἰωάννης διεκώλυεν αὐτὸν λέγων· Ἐγὼ χρείαν ἔχω ὑπὸ σοῦ βαπτισθῆναι, καὶ σὺ ἔρχῃ πρός με; (Ⅲ) - Joannes autem prohibebat eum, dicens : Ego a te debeo baptizari, et tu venis ad me ? (Ⅳ)

And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
- Jésus lui répondit: Laisse faire maintenant, car il est convenable que nous accomplissions ainsi tout ce qui est juste. Et Jean ne lui résista plus. (Ⅱ) - ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν ⸂πρὸς αὐτόν⸃· Ἄφες ἄρτι, οὕτως γὰρ πρέπον ἐστὶν ἡμῖν πληρῶσαι πᾶσαν δικαιοσύνην. τότε ἀφίησιν αὐτόν. (Ⅲ) - Respondens autem Jesus, dixit ei : Sine modo : sic enim decet nos implere omnem justitiam. Tunc dimisit eum. (Ⅳ)

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
- Dès que Jésus eut été baptisé, il sortit de l'eau. Et voici, les cieux s'ouvrirent, et il vit l'Esprit de Dieu descendre comme une colombe et venir sur lui. (Ⅱ) - ⸂βαπτισθεὶς δὲ⸃ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ⸂εὐθὺς ἀνέβη⸃ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕδατος· καὶ ἰδοὺ ⸀ἠνεῴχθησαν οἱ οὐρανοί, καὶ εἶδεν ⸀πνεῦμα θεοῦ καταβαῖνον ὡσεὶ ⸀περιστερὰν ἐρχόμενον ἐπ’ αὐτόν· (Ⅲ) - Baptizatus autem Jesus, confestim ascendit de aqua, et ecce aperti sunt ei cæli : et vidit Spiritum Dei descendentem sicut columbam, et venientem super se. (Ⅳ)

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
- Et voici, une voix fit entendre des cieux ces paroles: Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j'ai mis toute mon affection. (Ⅱ) - καὶ ἰδοὺ φωνὴ ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν λέγουσα· Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός, ἐν ᾧ εὐδόκησα. (Ⅲ) - Et ecce vox de cælis dicens : Hic est Filius meus dilectus, in quo mihi complacui. (Ⅳ)
