Lorsque Sanballat apprit que nous rebâtissions la muraille, il fut en colère et très irrité.
- But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews. (Ⅱ) - Factum est autem, cum audisset Sanaballat quod ædificaremus murum, iratus est valde : et motus nimis subsannavit Judæos, (Ⅳ) - 1 ׃4 ויהי כאשר שמע סנבלט וטוביה והערבים והעמנים והאשדודים כי עלתה ארוכה לחמות ירושלם כי החלו הפרצים להסתם ויחר להם מאד (Ⅴ)

Il se moqua des Juifs, et dit devant ses frères et devant les soldats de Samarie: A quoi travaillent ces Juifs impuissants? Les laissera-t-on faire? Sacrifieront-ils? Vont-ils achever? Redonneront-ils vie à des pierres ensevelies sous des monceaux de poussière et consumées par le feu?
- And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned? (Ⅱ) - et dixit coram fratribus suis, et frequentia Samaritanorum : Quid Judæi faciunt imbecilles ? num dimittent eos gentes ? num sacrificabunt, et complebunt in una die ? numquid ædificare poterunt lapides de acervis pulveris, qui combusti sunt ? (Ⅳ) - 2 ׃4 ויקשרו כלם יחדו לבוא להלחם בירושלם ולעשות לו תועה (Ⅴ)

Tobija, l'Ammonite, était à côté de lui, et il dit: Qu'ils bâtissent seulement! Si un renard s'élance, il renversera leur muraille de pierres!
- Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall. (Ⅱ) - Sed et Tobias Ammanites, proximus ejus, ait : Ædificent : si ascenderit vulpes, transiliet murum eorum lapideum. (Ⅳ) - 3 ׃4 ונתפלל אל אלהינו ונעמיד משמר עליהם יומם ולילה מפניהם (Ⅴ)

Écoute, ô notre Dieu, comme nous sommes méprisés! Fais retomber leurs insultes sur leur tête, et livre-les au pillage sur une terre où ils soient captifs.
- Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity: (Ⅱ) - Audi, Deus noster, quia facti sumus despectui : converte opprobrium super caput eorum, et da eos in despectionem in terra captivitatis. (Ⅳ) - 4 ׃4 ויאמר יהודה כשל כח הסבל והעפר הרבה ואנחנו לא נוכל לבנות בחומה (Ⅴ)

Ne pardonne pas leur iniquité, et que leur péché ne soit pas effacé de devant toi; car ils ont offensé ceux qui bâtissent.
- And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders. (Ⅱ) - Ne operias iniquitatem eorum, et peccatum eorum coram facie tua non deleatur, quia irriserunt ædificantes. (Ⅳ) - 5 ׃4 ויאמרו צרינו לא ידעו ולא יראו עד אשר נבוא אל תוכם והרגנום והשבתנו את המלאכה (Ⅴ)

Nous rebâtîmes la muraille, qui fut partout achevée jusqu'à la moitié de sa hauteur. Et le peuple prit à coeur ce travail.
- So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work. (Ⅱ) - Itaque ædificavimus murum, et conjunximus totum usque ad partem dimidiam : et provocatum est cor populi ad operandum. (Ⅳ) - 6 ׃4 ויהי כאשר באו היהודים הישבים אצלם ויאמרו לנו עשר פעמים מכל המקמות אשר תשובו עלינו (Ⅴ)

Mais Sanballat, Tobija, les Arabes, les Ammonites et les Asdodiens, furent très irrités en apprenant que la réparation des murs avançait et que les brèches commençaient à se fermer.
- But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, (Ⅱ) - Factum est autem, cum audisset Sanaballat, et Tobias, et Arabes, et Ammanitæ, et Azotii, quod obducta esset cicatrix muri Jerusalem, et quod cœpissent interrupta concludi, irati sunt nimis. (Ⅳ) - 7 ׃4 ואעמיד מתחתיות למקום מאחרי לחומה *בצחחיים **בצחיחים ואעמיד את העם למשפחות עם חרבתיהם רמחיהם וקשתתיהם (Ⅴ)

Ils se liguèrent tous ensemble pour venir attaquer Jérusalem et lui causer du dommage.
- And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. (Ⅱ) - Et congregati sunt omnes pariter ut venirent, et pugnarent contra Jerusalem, et molirentur insidias. (Ⅳ) - 8 ׃4 וארא ואקום ואמר אל החרים ואל הסגנים ואל יתר העם אל תיראו מפניהם את אדני הגדול והנורא זכרו והלחמו על אחיכם בניכם ובנתיכם נשיכם ובתיכם פ (Ⅴ)

Nous priâmes notre Dieu, et nous établîmes une garde jour et nuit pour nous défendre contre leurs attaques.
- Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them. (Ⅱ) - Et oravimus Deum nostrum, et posuimus custodes super murum die ac nocte contra eos. (Ⅳ) - 9 ׃4 ויהי כאשר שמעו אויבינו כי נודע[C][c] לנו ויפר האלהים את עצתם *ונשוב **ונשב כלנו אל החומה איש אל מלאכתו (Ⅴ)

Cependant Juda disait: Les forces manquent à ceux qui portent les fardeaux, et les décombres sont considérables; nous ne pourrons pas bâtir la muraille.
- And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall. (Ⅱ) - Dixit autem Judas : Debilitata est fortitudo portantis, et humus nimia est, et nos non poterimus ædificare murum. (Ⅳ) - 10 ׃4 ויהי מן היום ההוא חצי נערי עשים במלאכה וחצים מחזיקים והרמחים המגנים והקשתות והשרינים והשרים אחרי כל בית יהודה (Ⅴ)

Et nos ennemis disaient: Ils ne sauront et ne verront rien jusqu'à ce que nous arrivions au milieu d'eux; nous les tuerons, et nous ferons ainsi cesser l'ouvrage.
- And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease. (Ⅱ) - Et dixerunt hostes nostri : Nesciant, et ignorent donec veniamus in medium eorum, et interficiamus eos, et cessare faciamus opus. (Ⅳ) - 11 ׃4 הבונים בחומה והנשאים בסבל עמשים באחת ידו עשה במלאכה ואחת מחזקת השלח (Ⅴ)

Or les Juifs qui habitaient près d'eux vinrent dix fois nous avertir, de tous les lieux d'où ils se rendaient vers nous.
- And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you. (Ⅱ) - Factum est autem venientibus Judæis qui habitabant juxta eos, et dicentibus nobis per decem vices, ex omnibus locis quibus venerant ad nos, (Ⅳ) - 12 ׃4 והבונים איש חרבו אסורים על מתניו ובונים והתוקע בשופר אצלי (Ⅴ)

C'est pourquoi je plaçai, dans les enfoncements derrière la muraille et sur des terrains secs, le peuple par familles, tous avec leurs épées, leurs lances et leurs arcs.
- Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows. (Ⅱ) - statui in loco post murum per circuitum populum in ordinem cum gladiis suis, et lanceis, et arcubus. (Ⅳ) - 13 ׃4 ואמר אל החרים ואל הסגנים ואל יתר העם המלאכה הרבה ורחבה ואנחנו נפרדים על החומה רחוקים איש מאחיו (Ⅴ)

Je regardai, et m'étant levé, je dis aux grands, aux magistrats, et au reste du peuple: Ne les craignez pas! Souvenez-vous du Seigneur, grand et redoutable, et combattez pour vos frères, pour vos fils et vos filles, pour vos femmes et pour vos maisons!
- And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the LORD, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses. (Ⅱ) - Et perspexi atque surrexi : et aio ad optimates et magistratus, et ad reliquam partem vulgi : Nolite timere a facie eorum : Domini magni et terribilis mementote, et pugnate pro fratribus vestris, filiis vestris, et filiabus vestris, et uxoribus vestris, et domibus vestris. (Ⅳ) - 14 ׃4 במקום אשר תשמעו את קול השופר שמה תקבצו אלינו אלהינו ילחם לנו (Ⅴ)

Lorsque nos ennemis apprirent que nous étions avertis, Dieu anéantit leur projet, et nous retournâmes tous à la muraille, chacun à son ouvrage.
- And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work. (Ⅱ) - Factum est autem, cum audissent inimici nostri nuntiatum esse nobis, dissipavit Deus consilium eorum. Et reversi sumus omnes ad muros, unusquisque ad opus suum. (Ⅳ) - 15 ׃4 ואנחנו עשים במלאכה וחצים מחזיקים ברמחים מעלות השחר עד צאת הכוכבים (Ⅴ)

Depuis ce jour, la moitié de mes serviteurs travaillait, et l'autre moitié était armée de lances, de boucliers, d'arcs et de cuirasses. Les chefs étaient derrière toute la maison de Juda.
- And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah. (Ⅱ) - Et factum est a die illa, media pars juvenum eorum faciebat opus, et media parata erat ad bellum : et lanceæ, et scuta, et arcus, et loricæ, et principes post eos in omni domo Juda. (Ⅳ) - 16 ׃4 גם בעת ההיא אמרתי לעם איש ונערו ילינו בתוך ירושלם והיו לנו הלילה משמר והיום מלאכה (Ⅴ)

Ceux qui bâtissaient la muraille, et ceux qui portaient ou chargeaient les fardeaux, travaillaient d'une main et tenaient une arme de l'autre;
- They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon. (Ⅱ) - Ædificantium in muro, et portantium onera, et imponentium : una manu sua faciebat opus, et altera tenebat gladium : (Ⅳ) - 17 ׃4 ואין אני ואחי ונערי ואנשי המשמר אשר אחרי אין אנחנו פשטים בגדינו איש שלחו המים ס (Ⅴ)

chacun d'eux, en travaillant, avait son épée ceinte autour des reins. Celui qui sonnait de la trompette se tenait près de moi.
- For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me. (Ⅱ) - ædificentium enim unusquisque gladio erat accinctus renes. Et ædificabant, et clangebant buccina juxta me. (Ⅳ)

Je dis aux grands, aux magistrats, et au reste du peuple: L'ouvrage est considérable et étendu, et nous sommes dispersés sur la muraille, éloignés les uns des autres.
- And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another. (Ⅱ) - Et dixi ad optimates, et ad magistratus, et ad reliquam partem vulgi : Opus grande est et latum, et nos separati sumus in muro procul alter ab altero : (Ⅳ)

Au son de la trompette, rassemblez-vous auprès de nous, vers le lieu d'où vous l'entendrez; notre Dieu combattra pour nous.
- In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us. (Ⅱ) - in loco quocumque audieritis clangorem tubæ, illuc concurrite ad nos : Deus noster pugnabit pro nobis. (Ⅳ)

C'est ainsi que nous poursuivions l'ouvrage, la moitié d'entre nous la lance à la main depuis le lever de l'aurore jusqu'à l'apparition des étoiles.
- So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared. (Ⅱ) - Et nos ipsi faciamus opus, et media pars nostrum teneat lanceas ab ascensu auroræ donec egrediantur astra. (Ⅳ)

Dans ce même temps, je dis encore au peuple: Que chacun passe la nuit dans Jérusalem avec son serviteur; faisons la garde pendant la nuit, et travaillons pendant le jour.
- Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day. (Ⅱ) - In tempore quoque illo dixi populo : Unusquisque cum puero suo maneat in medio Jerusalem, et sint nobis vices per noctem et diem ad operandum. (Ⅳ)

Et nous ne quittions point nos vêtements, ni moi, ni mes frères, ni mes serviteurs, ni les hommes de garde qui me suivaient; chacun n'avait que ses armes et de l'eau.
- So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing. (Ⅱ) - Ego autem et fratres mei, et pueri mei, et custodes, qui erant post me, non deponebamus vestimenta nostra : unusquisque tantum nudabatur ad baptismum. (Ⅳ)
