- Alhamdu lillahi rabbi alAAalameena (Ⅰ) - In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. (Ⅱ) - Praise belongs to God, the Lord of all Being, (Ⅲ) - بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ (Ⅳ) - Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds; (Ⅵ)

When the Inevitable Event comes to pass -
- Itha waqaAAati alwaqiAAatu (Ⅰ) - When the event befalleth - (Ⅱ) - When the Terror descends (Ⅲ) - بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ (Ⅳ) - When the Event inevitable cometh to pass, (Ⅵ)

There is no denying that it will come -
- Laysa liwaqAAatiha kathibatun (Ⅰ) - There is no denying that it will befall - (Ⅱ) - (and none denies its descending) (Ⅲ) - لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ (Ⅳ) - Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming. (Ⅵ)

Abasing some, exalting others.
- Khafidatun rafiAAatun (Ⅰ) - Abasing (some), exalting (others); (Ⅱ) - abasing, exalting, (Ⅲ) - خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ (Ⅳ) - (Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt; (Ⅵ)

When the earth shall be shaken to its foundations,
- Itha rujjati alardu rajjan (Ⅰ) - When the earth is shaken with a shock (Ⅱ) - when the earth shall be rocked (Ⅲ) - إِذَا رُجَّتِ الْأَرْضُ رَجًّا (Ⅳ) - When the earth shall be shaken to its depths, (Ⅵ)

56.

And the mountains shall be crumbled,
- Wabussati aljibalu bassan (Ⅰ) - And the hills are ground to powder (Ⅱ) - and the mountains crumbled (Ⅲ) - وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا (Ⅳ) - And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms, (Ⅵ)

56.

So that they shall be as scattered dust.
- Fakanat habaan munbaththan (Ⅰ) - So that they become a scattered dust, (Ⅱ) - and become a dust, scattered, (Ⅲ) - فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُّنبَثًّا (Ⅳ) - Becoming dust scattered abroad, (Ⅵ)

56.

And you shall be sorted into three classes,
- Wakuntum azwajan thalathatan (Ⅰ) - And ye will be three kinds: (Ⅱ) - and you shall be three bands -- (Ⅲ) - وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَاجًا ثَلَاثَةً (Ⅳ) - And ye shall be sorted out into three classes. (Ⅵ)

First the companions of the right hand - what will be the companions of the right hand?
- Faashabu almaymanati ma ashabu almaymanati (Ⅰ) - (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand ? (Ⅱ) - Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!) (Ⅲ) - فَأَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ (Ⅳ) - Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand;- What will be the Companions of the Right Hand? (Ⅵ)

And then the companions of the left hand - what will be the companions of the left hand?
- Waashabu almashamati ma ashabu almashamati (Ⅰ) - And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand ? (Ⅱ) - Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) (Ⅲ) - وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ (Ⅳ) - And the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? (Ⅵ)

And those foremost (in faith) will be the foremost (in the Hereafter),
- Waalssabiqoona alssabiqoona (Ⅰ) - And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race: (Ⅱ) - and the Outstrippers: the Outstrippers (Ⅲ) - وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ (Ⅳ) - And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter). (Ⅵ)

These are they who are drawn nigh (to Allah),
- Olaika almuqarraboona (Ⅰ) - Those are they who will be brought nigh (Ⅱ) - those are they brought nigh the Throne, (Ⅲ) - أُولَٰئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ (Ⅳ) - These will be those Nearest to Allah: (Ⅵ)

In the Gardens of Bliss.
- Fee jannati alnnaAAeemi (Ⅰ) - In gardens of delight; (Ⅱ) - in the Gardens of Delight (Ⅲ) - فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ (Ⅳ) - In Gardens of Bliss: (Ⅵ)

A multitude of those of old,
- Thullatun mina alawwaleena (Ⅰ) - A multitude of those of old (Ⅱ) - (a throng of the ancients (Ⅲ) - ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ (Ⅳ) - A number of people from those of old, (Ⅵ)

56.

And a few of those of later times.
- Waqaleelun mina alakhireena (Ⅰ) - And a few of those of later time. (Ⅱ) - and how few of the later folk) (Ⅲ) - وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ الْآخِرِينَ (Ⅳ) - And a few from those of later times. (Ⅵ)

On thrones decorated,
- AAala sururin mawdoonatin (Ⅰ) - On lined couches, (Ⅱ) - upon close-wrought couches (Ⅲ) - عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ (Ⅳ) - (They will be) on Thrones encrusted (with gold and precious stones), (Ⅵ)

Reclining on them, facing one another.
- Muttakieena AAalayha mutaqabileena (Ⅰ) - Reclining therein face to face. (Ⅱ) - reclining upon them, set face to face, (Ⅲ) - مُّتَّكِئِينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَابِلِينَ (Ⅳ) - Reclining on them, facing each other. (Ⅵ)

56.

Round about them shall serve youths of permanent freshness (immortal or never altering in age),
- Yatoofu AAalayhim wildanun mukhalladoona (Ⅰ) - There wait on them immortal youths (Ⅱ) - immortal youths going round about them (Ⅲ) - يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ (Ⅳ) - Round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness), (Ⅵ)

|
56.

With goblets and ewers and a cup filled from a pure fountain;
- Biakwabin waabareeqa wakasin min maAAeenin (Ⅰ) - With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring (Ⅱ) - with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring (Ⅲ) - بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ (Ⅳ) - With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing fountains: (Ⅵ)

56.

They shall not suffer with headache thereby, nor shall they get intoxicated (or exhausted),
- La yusaddaAAoona AAanha wala yunzifoona (Ⅰ) - Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, (Ⅱ) - (no brows throbbing, no intoxication) (Ⅲ) - لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ (Ⅳ) - No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication: (Ⅵ)

And fruits such as they choose,
- Wafakihatin mimma yatakhayyaroona (Ⅰ) - And fruit that they prefer (Ⅱ) - and such fruits as they shall choose, (Ⅲ) - وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ (Ⅳ) - And with fruits, any that they may select: (Ⅵ)

56.

And the flesh of fowl and any as they desire.
- Walahmi tayrin mimma yashtahoona (Ⅰ) - And flesh of fowls that they desire. (Ⅱ) - and such flesh of fowl as they desire, (Ⅲ) - وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ (Ⅳ) - And the flesh of fowls, any that they may desire. (Ⅵ)

And pure, beautiful companions,
- Wahoorun AAeenun (Ⅰ) - And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes, (Ⅱ) - and wide-eyed houris (Ⅲ) - وَحُورٌ عِينٌ (Ⅳ) - And (there will be) Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes,- (Ⅵ)

56.

The like of the well-preserved pearls:
- Kaamthali allului almaknooni (Ⅰ) - Like unto hidden pearls, (Ⅱ) - as the likeness of hidden pearls, (Ⅲ) - كَأَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِ الْمَكْنُونِ (Ⅳ) - Like unto Pearls well-guarded. (Ⅵ)

56.

A reward for what they used to do.
- Jazaan bima kanoo yaAAmaloona (Ⅰ) - Reward for what they used to do. (Ⅱ) - a recompense for that they laboured. (Ⅲ) - جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ (Ⅳ) - A Reward for the deeds of their past (life). (Ⅵ)

56.

They shall not hear therein vain or sinful discourse,
- La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwan wala tatheeman (Ⅰ) - There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination (Ⅱ) - Therein they shall hear no idle talk, no cause of sin, (Ⅲ) - لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا (Ⅳ) - Not frivolity will they hear therein, nor any taint of ill,- (Ⅵ)

Except the saying, "Peace! Peace!"
- Illa qeelan salaman salaman (Ⅰ) - (Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace. (Ⅱ) - only the saying ´Peace, Peace!´ (Ⅲ) - إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَامًا سَلَامًا (Ⅳ) - Only the saying, "Peace! Peace". (Ⅵ)

56.

And the companions of the right hand; what of the companions of the Right Hand!
- Waashabu alyameeni ma ashabu alyameeni (Ⅰ) - And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand ? (Ⅱ) - The Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!) (Ⅲ) - وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ (Ⅳ) - The Companions of the Right Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Right Hand? (Ⅵ)

Amid thornless Lote-trees,
- Fee sidrin makhdoodin (Ⅰ) - Among thornless lote-trees (Ⅱ) - mid thornless lote-trees (Ⅲ) - فِي سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ (Ⅳ) - (They will be) among Lote-trees without thorns, (Ⅵ)

56.

And tall trees with clusters of flowers (or fruits) one above another.
- Watalhin mandoodin (Ⅰ) - And clustered plantains, (Ⅱ) - and serried acacias, (Ⅲ) - وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ (Ⅳ) - Among Talh trees with flowers (or fruits) piled one above another,- (Ⅵ)

And spreading shade,
- Wathillin mamdoodin (Ⅰ) - And spreading shade, (Ⅱ) - and spreading shade (Ⅲ) - وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ (Ⅳ) - In shade long-extended, (Ⅵ)
|

|
|

And water flowing constantly,
- Wamain maskoobin (Ⅰ) - And water gushing, (Ⅱ) - and outpoured waters, (Ⅲ) - وَمَاءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ (Ⅳ) - By water flowing constantly, (Ⅵ)

|
56.

And abundant fruit,
- Wafakihatin katheeratin (Ⅰ) - And fruit in plenty (Ⅱ) - and fruits abounding (Ⅲ) - وَفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ (Ⅳ) - And fruit in abundance. (Ⅵ)

Neither intercepted nor forbidden,
- La maqtooAAatin wala mamnooAAatin (Ⅰ) - Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden, (Ⅱ) - unfailing, unforbidden, (Ⅲ) - لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ (Ⅳ) - Whose season is not limited, nor (supply) forbidden, (Ⅵ)

|
56.

And exalted thrones.
- Wafurushin marfooAAatin (Ⅰ) - And raised couches; (Ⅱ) - and upraised couches. (Ⅲ) - وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ (Ⅳ) - And on Thrones (of Dignity), raised high. (Ⅵ)

Surely We have created them into a new creation,
- Inna anshanahunna inshaan (Ⅰ) - Lo! We have created them a (new) creation (Ⅱ) - Perfectly We formed them, perfect, (Ⅲ) - إِنَّا أَنشَأْنَاهُنَّ إِنشَاءً (Ⅳ) - We have created (their Companions) of special creation. (Ⅵ)

|
56.
36
And made them virgins pure,
- FajaAAalnahunna abkaran (Ⅰ) - And made them virgins, (Ⅱ) - and We made them spotless virgins, (Ⅲ) - فَجَعَلْنَاهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا (Ⅳ) - And made them virgin - pure (and undefiled), - (Ⅵ)

Loving friends, equals in age,
- AAuruban atraban (Ⅰ) - Lovers, friends, (Ⅱ) - chastely amorous, (Ⅲ) - عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا (Ⅳ) - Beloved (by nature), equal in age,- (Ⅵ)

For the sake of the companions of the right hand.
- Liashabi alyameeni (Ⅰ) - For those on the right hand; (Ⅱ) - like of age for the Companions of the Right. (Ⅲ) - لِّأَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ (Ⅳ) - For the Companions of the Right Hand. (Ⅵ)

- Wathullatun mina alakhireena (Ⅰ) - And a multitude of those of later time. (Ⅱ) - and a throng of the later folk. (Ⅲ) - وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْآخِرِينَ (Ⅳ) - And a (goodly) number from those of later times. (Ⅵ)

And those of the left hand; what of those of the Left Hand?
- Waashabu alshshimali ma ashabu alshshimali (Ⅰ) - And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand ? (Ⅱ) - The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) (Ⅲ) - وَأَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ (Ⅳ) - The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? (Ⅵ)

In hot wind and boiling water,
- Fee samoomin wahameemin (Ⅰ) - In scorching wind and scalding water (Ⅱ) - mid burning winds and boiling waters (Ⅲ) - فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ (Ⅳ) - (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, (Ⅵ)

56.

And the shade of black smoke,
- Wathillin min yahmoomin (Ⅰ) - And shadow of black smoke, (Ⅱ) - and the shadow of a smoking blaze (Ⅲ) - وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ (Ⅳ) - And in the shades of Black Smoke: (Ⅵ)

56.

Neither cool nor honourable.
- La baridin wala kareemin (Ⅰ) - Neither cool nor refreshing. (Ⅱ) - neither cool, neither goodly; (Ⅲ) - لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ (Ⅳ) - Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: (Ⅵ)

Surely they were before this made to live in ease and plenty.
- Innahum kanoo qabla thalika mutrafeena (Ⅰ) - Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury (Ⅱ) - and before that they lived at ease, (Ⅲ) - إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ (Ⅳ) - For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), (Ⅵ)

And they persisted in the great violation (or great sin).
- Wakanoo yusirroona AAala alhinthi alAAatheemi (Ⅰ) - And used to persist in the awful sin. (Ⅱ) - and persisted in the Great Sin, (Ⅲ) - وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنثِ الْعَظِيمِ (Ⅳ) - And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! (Ⅵ)

And they used to say, "What! When we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised?
- Wakanoo yaqooloona aitha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman ainna lamabAAoothoona (Ⅰ) - And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, (Ⅱ) - ever saying, ´What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? (Ⅲ) - وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ (Ⅳ) - And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- (Ⅵ)

"Or our fathers of yore?"
- Awa abaona alawwaloona (Ⅰ) - And also our forefathers ? (Ⅱ) - What, and our fathers, the ancients?´ (Ⅲ) - أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ (Ⅳ) - "(We) and our fathers of old?" (Ⅵ)

Say, "The first and the last,
- Qul inna alawwaleena waalakhireena (Ⅰ) - Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time (Ⅱ) - Say: ´The ancients, and the later folk (Ⅲ) - قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ (Ⅳ) - Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, (Ⅵ)
