W hat is hateful to thee, never do to thy fellow man: that is the entire Torah; all the rest is commentary.

quote 6382  |   The Talmud
Hillel, Shabbat 31a

H e who excites himself by lustful thoughts will not be allowed to enter
the division of the Holy One.

quote 4410  |   The Talmud
Nidda 13b

T orah abides only with him who regards himself as nothing.

quote 4397  |   The Talmud
Sota 21b

O ne must not stand up and say the Tefillah except in a serious frame of
mind. The pious men of old used to wait an hour, and then say the prayer,
in order to direct their hearts to their Father in heaven.

quote 4384  |   The Talmud
Mishnah, Berakot 5.1

A lways let a man test himself: if he can direct his heart, let him pray;
if he cannot, let him not pray.

quote 4374  |   The Talmud
Berakot 30b

L et thy house be a place of meeting for the wise, and dust thyself with
the dust of their feet, and drink their words with thirst.

quote 4357  |   The Talmud
Mishnah, Abot 1.4

G reater is he who acts from love than he who acts from fear.

quote 4342  |   The Talmud
Sota 31a

A nd you shall love the Lord"--namely, you shall make the Lord beloved.

quote 4340  |   The Talmud
Yoma 86

R abbi Simlai said, "Six hundred and thirteen commandments were given to
Moses, 365 negative commandments, answering to the number of the days of
the year, and 248 positive commandments, answering to the number of a
man's members. Then David came and reduced them to eleven [Psalm 15].
Then came Isaiah, and reduced them to six [Isaiah 63.15]. Then came
Micah, and reduced them to three [Micah 6.8]. Then Isaiah came again, and
reduced them to two, as it is said, 'Keep ye judgment and do
righteousness.' Then came Amos, and reduced them to one, as it is said,
'Seek me and live.' Or one may say, then came Habakkuk [2.4], and reduced
them to one, as it is said, 'The righteous shall live by his faith.'"

quote 4332  |   The Talmud
Makkot 23b-24a

H appy are the righteous! Not only do they acquire merit, but they bestow
merit upon their children and children's children to the end of all
generations, for Aaron had several sons who deserved to be burned like
Nadab and Abihu, but the merit of their father helped them. Woe unto the
wicked! Not alone that they render themselves guilty, but they bestow
guilt upon their children and children's children unto the end of all
generations. Many sons did Canaan have, who were worthy to be ordained
like Tabi, the slave of Rabbi Gamaliel, but the guilt of their ancestor
caused them [to lose their chance].

quote 4322  |   The Talmud
Yoma 87a

H im who humbles himself, God exalts; him who exalts himself, God humbles;
from him who searches for greatness, greatness flies; him who flies from
greatness, greatness searches out: with him who is importunate with
circumstances, circumstance is importunate; by him who gives way to
circumstance, circumstance stands.

quote 4303  |   The Talmud
Erubin 13b

I s there a "righteous man" who is good and a righteous man who is not good? He who is good to Heaven and good to man, he is a righteous man who is good; good to Heaven but not good to man, that is a righteous man who is evil... But a wicked man who is evil to Heaven and evil to man, he is a wicked man who is evil; he who is evil to Heaven but not evil to man, that is a wicked man who is not evil.

quote 4279  |   The Talmud
Kiddushin 40a

R abbi Isaac said, "Man's evil inclination renews itself daily against him, as it is said, 'Every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil every day.' [Genesis 6.5]." And Rabbi Simeon ben Levi said, "Man's evil inclination gathers strength against him daily and seeks to slay him... and were not the Holy One, blessed be He, to help him, he could not prevail against it."

quote 4262  |   The Talmud
Kiddushin 30b

N ot like this world is the World to Come. In the World to Come there is neither eating nor drinking, nor procreation of children or business transactions, no envy or hatred or rivalry; but the righteous sit enthroned, their crowns on their heads, and enjoy the luster of the Divine Splendor (Shechinah).

quote 4245  |   The Talmud
Berakot 17a

A nd the dead to be brought to life again; and the living to be judged, to know, to make known, and to be made conscious that He is God, He the Maker, He the Creator, He the Discerner, He the Judge, He the Witness, He the Complainant; He it is that will in future judge, blessed be He, with whom there is no unrighteousness, nor forgetfulness, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes. Know also that everything is according to reckoning; and let not your imagination give you hope that the grave will be a place of refuge for you. For perforce you were formed, and perforce you were born, and perforce you live, and perforce you will die, and perforce you will in the future have to give account and reckoning before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He.

quote 4241  |   The Talmud

L et a man always consider himself as if the Holy One dwells within him.

quote 4183  |   The Talmud
Ta'anit 11b

B eloved is man, for he was created in the image of God. But it was by a special love that it was made known to him that he was created in the image of God.
