The Book of Proverbs: History

The title of the book of Proverbs comes down originally from its Hebrew form Míshlê Shelomoh (Proverbs of Solomon). When translated into Greek and Latin the title took on different forms. In the Greek Septuagint (LXX) the title changes to paroimai paroimiae (proverbs). In the Latin vulgate the title then reads proverbial, from which the English title of Proverbs is derived. Over time and through the various translation processes Solomon’s name comes out of the title. The title of the book states content, however, rather than asserting authorship. Authorship The authorship of Proverbs is not an easy thing to determine. Although there is mention of Solomon’s name in Proverbs 1:1 “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel” , this does not mean for certain that he was the author. Often people would place the name of the king or someone of prominence in their writings to honour people of prominence or importance . There is also the possibility that Solomon’s name was mentioned to give the book more prestige . However Solomon is often mentioned as someone who has extensive wisdom in the Bible as well as in extra biblical literature. In 1 Kings 4:29-34 3000 proverbs and over 1000 songs are said to have come from Solomon, and these ranged from the trees of Lebanon to animals. It is also said that people came from all over to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Solomon is attested to be a man of great wisdom and these are elements which are used to support his authorship of Proverbs. The general assumption is that Solomon was a part of the authorship to some extent. Even though Solomon’s wisdom and likely involvement cannot be denied, based on the scholarship, it is fair to say that the entirety of the book was not solely from his hand. There are also other names that are linked to other sections of the book. There are also elements of disunity among some of the sections of Proverbs again suggesting more than one author. This can lead to the assumption that Proverbs is more of an anthology collection than the specific writing of any one person . Some of the authorship is attributed to Men of Hezekiah who simply transcribed the proverbs of Solomon rather than writing them of their own accord.
