74. 0  
The Beneficent, the Merciful,
- Alhamdu lillahi rabbi alAAalameena (Ⅰ)
- In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. (Ⅱ)
- Praise belongs to God, the Lord of all Being, (Ⅲ)
- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ (Ⅳ)
- Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds; (Ⅵ)
74. 1  
O you enveloped in your cloak!
- Ya ayyuha almuddaththiru (Ⅰ)
- O thou enveloped in thy cloak, (Ⅱ)
- O thou shrouded in thy mantle, (Ⅲ)
- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ (Ⅳ)
- O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! (Ⅵ)
74. 2  
Arise and warn,
- Qum faanthir (Ⅰ)
- Arise and warn! (Ⅱ)
- arise, and warn! (Ⅲ)
- قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ (Ⅳ)
- Arise and deliver thy warning! (Ⅵ)
74. 3  
And magnify your Lord,
- Warabbaka fakabbir (Ⅰ)
- Thy Lord magnify, (Ⅱ)
- Thy Lord magnify (Ⅲ)
- وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ (Ⅳ)
- And thy Lord do thou magnify! (Ⅵ)
74. 4  
And your cloak do purify,
- Wathiyabaka fatahhir (Ⅰ)
- Thy raiment purify, (Ⅱ)
- thy robes purify (Ⅲ)
- وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ (Ⅳ)
- And thy garments keep free from stain! (Ⅵ)
74. 5  
And uncleanness do shun,
- Waalrrujza faohjur (Ⅰ)
- Pollution shun! (Ⅱ)
- and defilement flee! (Ⅲ)
- وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ (Ⅳ)
- And all abomination shun! (Ⅵ)
74. 6  
And bestow not favours that you may receive again with increase,
- Wala tamnun tastakthiru (Ⅰ)
- And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! (Ⅱ)
- Give not, thinking to gain greater (Ⅲ)
- وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ (Ⅳ)
- Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! (Ⅵ)
74. 7  
And for the sake of your Lord, be patient.
- Walirabbika faisbir (Ⅰ)
- For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! (Ⅱ)
- and be patient unto thy Lord. (Ⅲ)
- وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ (Ⅳ)
- But, for thy Lord´s (Cause), be patient and constant! (Ⅵ)
74. 8  
For when the trumpet is sounded,
- Faitha nuqira fee alnnaqoori (Ⅰ)
- For when the trumpet shall sound, (Ⅱ)
- For when the Trump is sounded (Ⅲ)
- فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُورِ (Ⅳ)
- Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, (Ⅵ)
74. 9  
That, at that time, shall be a Day of distress,
- Fathalika yawmaithin yawmun AAaseerun (Ⅰ)
- Surely that day will be a day of anguish, (Ⅱ)
- that day will be a harsh day, (Ⅲ)
- فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ (Ⅳ)
- That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- (Ⅵ)
74. 10  
Far from easy for the unbelievers.
- AAala alkafireena ghayru yaseerin (Ⅰ)
- Not of ease, for disbelievers. (Ⅱ)
- for the unbelievers not easy. (Ⅲ)
- عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ (Ⅳ)
- Far from easy for those without Faith. (Ⅵ)
74. 11  
Leave Me alone to deal with him whom I created,
- Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan (Ⅰ)
- Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, (Ⅱ)
- Leave Me with him whom I created alone, (Ⅲ)
- ذَرْنِي وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا (Ⅳ)
- Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- (Ⅵ)
74. 12  
And gave vast riches,
- WajaAAaltu lahu malan mamdoodan (Ⅰ)
- And then bestowed upon him ample means, (Ⅱ)
- and appointed for him ample wealth (Ⅲ)
- وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا (Ⅳ)
- To whom I granted resources in abundance, (Ⅵ)
74. 13  
And sons to be by his side,
- Wabaneena shuhoodan (Ⅰ)
- And sons abiding in his presence (Ⅱ)
- and sons standing before him, (Ⅲ)
- وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا (Ⅳ)
- And sons to be by his side!- (Ⅵ)
74. 14  
And I adjusted the affairs of life to go smoothly and appropriately for him;
- Wamahhadtu lahu tamheedan (Ⅰ)
- And made (life) smooth for him. (Ⅱ)
- and made all things smooth for him; (Ⅲ)
- وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُ تَمْهِيدًا (Ⅳ)
- To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! (Ⅵ)
74. 15  
And yet he desires that I should add more!
- Thumma yatmaAAu an azeeda (Ⅰ)
- Yet he desireth that I should give more. (Ⅱ)
- then he is eager that I should do more. (Ⅲ)
- ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ (Ⅳ)
- Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- (Ⅵ)
74. 16  
By no means! For lo! He stubbornly opposes Our revelations.
- Kalla innahu kana liayatina AAaneedan (Ⅰ)
- Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. (Ⅱ)
- Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; (Ⅲ)
- كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ لِآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا (Ⅳ)
- By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! (Ⅵ)
74. 17  
1 will impose on him a fearful doom.
- Saorhiquhu saAAoodan (Ⅰ)
- On him I shall impose a fearful doom. (Ⅱ)
- and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. (Ⅲ)
- سَأُرْهِقُهُ صَعُودًا (Ⅳ)
- Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! (Ⅵ)
74. 18  
Surely he reflected and then plotted,
- Innahu fakkara waqaddara (Ⅰ)
- For lo! he did consider; then he planned - (Ⅱ)
- Lo! He reflected, and determined -- (Ⅲ)
- إِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ (Ⅳ)
- For he thought and he plotted;- (Ⅵ)
74. 19  
But woe to him for how he plotted!
- Faqutila kayfa qaddara (Ⅰ)
- (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! (Ⅱ)
- death seize him, how he determined! (Ⅲ)
- فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ (Ⅳ)
- And woe to him! How he plotted!- (Ⅵ)
74. 20  
Again, woe to him for how he plotted!
- Thumma qutila kayfa qaddara (Ⅰ)
- Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - (Ⅱ)
- Again, death seize him, how he determined! (Ⅲ)
- ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ (Ⅳ)
- Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- (Ⅵ)
74. 21  
Then he looked around,
- Thumma nathara (Ⅰ)
- Then looked he, (Ⅱ)
- Then he beheld, (Ⅲ)
- ثُمَّ نَظَرَ (Ⅳ)
- Then he looked round; (Ⅵ)
74. 22  
Then he frowned and scowled,
- Thumma AAabasa wabasara (Ⅰ)
- Then frowned he and showed displeasure. (Ⅱ)
- then he frowned, and scowled, (Ⅲ)
- ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ (Ⅳ)
- Then he frowned and he scowled; (Ⅵ)
74. 23  
Then he turned back and was inflated with pride,
- Thumma adbara waistakbara (Ⅰ)
- Then turned he away in pride (Ⅱ)
- then he retreated, and waxed proud. (Ⅲ)
- ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ (Ⅳ)
- Then he turned back and was haughty; (Ⅵ)
74. 24  
Then he said, "This is naught but enchantment, narrated of olden days;
- Faqala in hatha illa sihrun yutharu (Ⅰ)
- And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; (Ⅱ)
- He said, ´This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; (Ⅲ)
- فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ (Ⅳ)
- Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; (Ⅵ)
74. 25  
"This is naught but the word of a mortal."
- In hatha illa qawlu albashari (Ⅰ)
- This is naught else than speech of mortal man. (Ⅱ)
- ´this is nothing but mortal speech.´ (Ⅲ)
- إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ (Ⅳ)
- "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" (Ⅵ)
74. 26  
Soon will I cast him into the burning (Hell-fire).
- Saosleehi saqara (Ⅰ)
- Him shall I fling unto the burning. (Ⅱ)
- I shall surely roast him in Sakar; (Ⅲ)
- سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ (Ⅳ)
- Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! (Ⅵ)
74. 27  
And what will make you understand what the burning (Hell-fire) is?
- Wama adraka ma saqaru (Ⅰ)
- - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - (Ⅱ)
- and what will teach thee what is Sakar? (Ⅲ)
- وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ (Ⅳ)
- And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? (Ⅵ)
74. 28  
It leaves naught, it spares naught.
- La tubqee wala tatharu (Ⅰ)
- It leaveth naught; it spareth naught (Ⅱ)
- It spares not, neither leaves alone (Ⅲ)
- لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ (Ⅳ)
- Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- (Ⅵ)
74. 29  
It scorches (darkens the colour) and shrivels the mortal.
- Lawwahatun lilbashari (Ⅰ)
- It shrivelleth the man. (Ⅱ)
- scorching the flesh; (Ⅲ)
- لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ (Ⅳ)
- Darkening and changing the colour of man! (Ⅵ)
74. 30  
Over it are nineteen.
- AAalayha tisAAata AAashara (Ⅰ)
- Above it are nineteen. (Ⅱ)
- over it are nineteen. (Ⅲ)
- عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ (Ⅳ)
- Over it are Nineteen. (Ⅵ)
74. 31  
And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the Book (scriptures) may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose heart is a disease and the unbelievers may say, "What does Allah mean by this parable?" Thus does Allah make err whom He wills, and He guides whom He wills, and none knows the hosts (or forces) of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals.
- Wama jaAAalna ashaba alnnari illa malaikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmuminoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari (Ⅰ)
- We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude ? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. (Ⅱ)
- We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, ´What did God intend by this as a similitude?´ So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. (Ⅲ)
- وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ النَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَائِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِيمَانًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَالْكَافِرُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَن يَشَاءُ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ (Ⅳ)
- And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. (Ⅵ)
74. 32  
Nay; I swear by (or call to witness) the moon,
- Kalla waalqamari (Ⅰ)
- Nay, by the Moon (Ⅱ)
- Nay! By the moon (Ⅲ)
- كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ (Ⅳ)
- Nay, verily: By the Moon, (Ⅵ)
74. 33  
And by the night when it departs,
- Waallayli ith adbara (Ⅰ)
- And the night when it withdraweth (Ⅱ)
- and the night when it retreats (Ⅲ)
- وَاللَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ (Ⅳ)
- And by the Night as it retreateth, (Ⅵ)
74. 34  
And by the Dawn when it shines forth;
- Waalssubhi itha asfara (Ⅰ)
- And the dawn when it shineth forth, (Ⅱ)
- and the dawn when it is white, (Ⅲ)
- وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا أَسْفَرَ (Ⅳ)
- And by the Dawn as it shineth forth,- (Ⅵ)
74. 35  
Surely, this is but one of the mighty Signs,
- Innaha laihda alkubari (Ⅰ)
- Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents) (Ⅱ)
- surely it is one of the greatest things (Ⅲ)
- إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى الْكُبَرِ (Ⅳ)
- This is but one of the mighty (portents), (Ⅵ)
74. 36  
A warning to mortals,
- Natheeran lilbashari (Ⅰ)
- As a warning unto men, (Ⅱ)
- as a warner to mortals. (Ⅲ)
- نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ (Ⅳ)
- A warning to mankind,- (Ⅵ)
74. 37  
To him among you who wishes to go forward or remain behind.
- Liman shaa minkum an yataqaddama aw yataakhkhara (Ⅰ)
- Unto him of you who will advance or hang back. (Ⅱ)
- to whoever of you desires to go forward or lag behind. (Ⅲ)
- لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ (Ⅳ)
- To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;- (Ⅵ)
74. 38  
Every soul is held in pledge for its own deeds,
- Kullu nafsin bima kasabat raheenatun (Ⅰ)
- Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds; (Ⅱ)
- Every soul shall be pledged for what it has earned, (Ⅲ)
- كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ (Ⅳ)
- Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds. (Ⅵ)
74. 39  
Except the people of the right hand,
- Illa ashaba alyameeni (Ⅰ)
- Save those who will stand on the right hand. (Ⅱ)
- save the Companions of the Right; (Ⅲ)
- إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ الْيَمِينِ (Ⅳ)
- Except the Companions of the Right Hand. (Ⅵ)
74. 40  
In Gardens, they shall ask each other
- Fee jannatin yatasaaloona (Ⅰ)
- In gardens they will ask one another (Ⅱ)
- in Gardens they will question (Ⅲ)
- فِي جَنَّاتٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ (Ⅳ)
- (They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each other, (Ⅵ)
74. 41  
And ask the guilty,
- AAani almujrimeena (Ⅰ)
- Concerning the guilty: (Ⅱ)
- concerning the sinners, (Ⅲ)
- عَنِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ (Ⅳ)
- And (ask) of the Sinners: (Ⅵ)
74. 42  
"What has brought you into hell?"
- Ma salakakum fee saqara (Ⅰ)
- What hath brought you to this burning ? (Ⅱ)
- ´What thrusted you into Sakar?´ (Ⅲ)
- مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ (Ⅳ)
- "What led you into Hell Fire?" (Ⅵ)
74. 43  
They shall say, "We were not of those who prayed;
- Qaloo lam naku mina almusalleena (Ⅰ)
- They will answer: We were not of those who prayed (Ⅱ)
- They shall say, ´We were not of those who prayed, and (Ⅲ)
- قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ (Ⅳ)
- They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; (Ⅵ)
74. 44  
"And we used not to feed the poor;
- Walam naku nutAAimu almiskeena (Ⅰ)
- Nor did we feed the wretched. (Ⅱ)
- we fed not the needy, (Ⅲ)
- وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ (Ⅳ)
- "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent; (Ⅵ)
74. 45  
"And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who entered into vain discourses.
- Wakunna nakhoodu maAAa alkhaideena (Ⅰ)
- We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders, (Ⅱ)
- and we plunged along with the plungers, (Ⅲ)
- وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِينَ (Ⅳ)
- "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; (Ⅵ)
74. 46  
"And we used to call the Day of Judgment a lie;
- Wakunna nukaththibu biyawmi alddeeni (Ⅰ)
- And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, (Ⅱ)
- and we cried lies to the Day of Doom, (Ⅲ)
- وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ (Ⅳ)
- "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, (Ⅵ)
74. 47  
"Till the inevitable event (death) overtook us."
- Hatta atana alyaqeenu (Ⅰ)
- Till the Inevitable came unto us. (Ⅱ)
- till the Certain came to us.´ -- (Ⅲ)
- حَتَّىٰ أَتَانَا الْيَقِينُ (Ⅳ)
- "Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain." (Ⅵ)
74. 48  
The intercession of no mediators shall avail them then.
- Fama tanfaAAuhum shafaAAatu alshshafiAAeena (Ⅰ)
- The mediation of no mediators will avail them then. (Ⅱ)
- Then the intercession of the intercessors shall not profit them. (Ⅲ)
- فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشَّافِعِينَ (Ⅳ)
- Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them. (Ⅵ)
74. 49  
What is then the matter with them that they turn away from the admonition,
- Fama lahum AAani alttathkirati muAArideena (Ⅰ)
- Why now turn they away from the Admonishment, (Ⅱ)
- What ails them, that they turn away from the Reminder, (Ⅲ)
- فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ (Ⅳ)
- Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?- (Ⅵ)
