74. 0  
Praise belongs to God, the Lord of all Being,
- Alhamdu lillahi rabbi alAAalameena (Ⅰ)
- The Beneficent, the Merciful, (Ⅱ)
- In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. (Ⅲ)
- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ (Ⅳ)
- Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds; (Ⅵ)
74. 1  
O thou shrouded in thy mantle,
- Ya ayyuha almuddaththiru (Ⅰ)
- O you enveloped in your cloak! (Ⅱ)
- O thou enveloped in thy cloak, (Ⅲ)
- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ (Ⅳ)
- O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! (Ⅵ)
74. 2  
arise, and warn!
- Qum faanthir (Ⅰ)
- Arise and warn, (Ⅱ)
- Arise and warn! (Ⅲ)
- قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ (Ⅳ)
- Arise and deliver thy warning! (Ⅵ)
74. 3  
Thy Lord magnify
- Warabbaka fakabbir (Ⅰ)
- And magnify your Lord, (Ⅱ)
- Thy Lord magnify, (Ⅲ)
- وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ (Ⅳ)
- And thy Lord do thou magnify! (Ⅵ)
74. 4  
thy robes purify
- Wathiyabaka fatahhir (Ⅰ)
- And your cloak do purify, (Ⅱ)
- Thy raiment purify, (Ⅲ)
- وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ (Ⅳ)
- And thy garments keep free from stain! (Ⅵ)
74. 5  
and defilement flee!
- Waalrrujza faohjur (Ⅰ)
- And uncleanness do shun, (Ⅱ)
- Pollution shun! (Ⅲ)
- وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ (Ⅳ)
- And all abomination shun! (Ⅵ)
74. 6  
Give not, thinking to gain greater
- Wala tamnun tastakthiru (Ⅰ)
- And bestow not favours that you may receive again with increase, (Ⅱ)
- And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! (Ⅲ)
- وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ (Ⅳ)
- Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! (Ⅵ)
74. 7  
and be patient unto thy Lord.
- Walirabbika faisbir (Ⅰ)
- And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. (Ⅱ)
- For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! (Ⅲ)
- وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ (Ⅳ)
- But, for thy Lord´s (Cause), be patient and constant! (Ⅵ)
74. 8  
For when the Trump is sounded
- Faitha nuqira fee alnnaqoori (Ⅰ)
- For when the trumpet is sounded, (Ⅱ)
- For when the trumpet shall sound, (Ⅲ)
- فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُورِ (Ⅳ)
- Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, (Ⅵ)
74. 9  
that day will be a harsh day,
- Fathalika yawmaithin yawmun AAaseerun (Ⅰ)
- That, at that time, shall be a Day of distress, (Ⅱ)
- Surely that day will be a day of anguish, (Ⅲ)
- فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ (Ⅳ)
- That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- (Ⅵ)
74. 10  
for the unbelievers not easy.
- AAala alkafireena ghayru yaseerin (Ⅰ)
- Far from easy for the unbelievers. (Ⅱ)
- Not of ease, for disbelievers. (Ⅲ)
- عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ (Ⅳ)
- Far from easy for those without Faith. (Ⅵ)
74. 11  
Leave Me with him whom I created alone,
- Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan (Ⅰ)
- Leave Me alone to deal with him whom I created, (Ⅱ)
- Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, (Ⅲ)
- ذَرْنِي وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا (Ⅳ)
- Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- (Ⅵ)
74. 12  
and appointed for him ample wealth
- WajaAAaltu lahu malan mamdoodan (Ⅰ)
- And gave vast riches, (Ⅱ)
- And then bestowed upon him ample means, (Ⅲ)
- وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا (Ⅳ)
- To whom I granted resources in abundance, (Ⅵ)
74. 13  
and sons standing before him,
- Wabaneena shuhoodan (Ⅰ)
- And sons to be by his side, (Ⅱ)
- And sons abiding in his presence (Ⅲ)
- وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا (Ⅳ)
- And sons to be by his side!- (Ⅵ)
74. 14  
and made all things smooth for him;
- Wamahhadtu lahu tamheedan (Ⅰ)
- And I adjusted the affairs of life to go smoothly and appropriately for him; (Ⅱ)
- And made (life) smooth for him. (Ⅲ)
- وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُ تَمْهِيدًا (Ⅳ)
- To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! (Ⅵ)
74. 15  
then he is eager that I should do more.
- Thumma yatmaAAu an azeeda (Ⅰ)
- And yet he desires that I should add more! (Ⅱ)
- Yet he desireth that I should give more. (Ⅲ)
- ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ (Ⅳ)
- Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- (Ⅵ)
74. 16  
Nay! He is forward unto Our signs;
- Kalla innahu kana liayatina AAaneedan (Ⅰ)
- By no means! For lo! He stubbornly opposes Our revelations. (Ⅱ)
- Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. (Ⅲ)
- كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ لِآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا (Ⅳ)
- By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! (Ⅵ)
74. 17  
and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent.
- Saorhiquhu saAAoodan (Ⅰ)
- 1 will impose on him a fearful doom. (Ⅱ)
- On him I shall impose a fearful doom. (Ⅲ)
- سَأُرْهِقُهُ صَعُودًا (Ⅳ)
- Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! (Ⅵ)
74. 18  
Lo! He reflected, and determined --
- Innahu fakkara waqaddara (Ⅰ)
- Surely he reflected and then plotted, (Ⅱ)
- For lo! he did consider; then he planned - (Ⅲ)
- إِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ (Ⅳ)
- For he thought and he plotted;- (Ⅵ)
74. 19  
death seize him, how he determined!
- Faqutila kayfa qaddara (Ⅰ)
- But woe to him for how he plotted! (Ⅱ)
- (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! (Ⅲ)
- فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ (Ⅳ)
- And woe to him! How he plotted!- (Ⅵ)
74. 20  
Again, death seize him, how he determined!
- Thumma qutila kayfa qaddara (Ⅰ)
- Again, woe to him for how he plotted! (Ⅱ)
- Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - (Ⅲ)
- ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ (Ⅳ)
- Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- (Ⅵ)
74. 21  
Then he beheld,
- Thumma nathara (Ⅰ)
- Then he looked around, (Ⅱ)
- Then looked he, (Ⅲ)
- ثُمَّ نَظَرَ (Ⅳ)
- Then he looked round; (Ⅵ)
74. 22  
then he frowned, and scowled,
- Thumma AAabasa wabasara (Ⅰ)
- Then he frowned and scowled, (Ⅱ)
- Then frowned he and showed displeasure. (Ⅲ)
- ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ (Ⅳ)
- Then he frowned and he scowled; (Ⅵ)
74. 23  
then he retreated, and waxed proud.
- Thumma adbara waistakbara (Ⅰ)
- Then he turned back and was inflated with pride, (Ⅱ)
- Then turned he away in pride (Ⅲ)
- ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ (Ⅳ)
- Then he turned back and was haughty; (Ⅵ)
74. 24  
He said, ´This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery;
- Faqala in hatha illa sihrun yutharu (Ⅰ)
- Then he said, "This is naught but enchantment, narrated of olden days; (Ⅱ)
- And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; (Ⅲ)
- فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ (Ⅳ)
- Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; (Ⅵ)
74. 25  
´this is nothing but mortal speech.´
- In hatha illa qawlu albashari (Ⅰ)
- "This is naught but the word of a mortal." (Ⅱ)
- This is naught else than speech of mortal man. (Ⅲ)
- إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ (Ⅳ)
- "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" (Ⅵ)
74. 26  
I shall surely roast him in Sakar;
- Saosleehi saqara (Ⅰ)
- Soon will I cast him into the burning (Hell-fire). (Ⅱ)
- Him shall I fling unto the burning. (Ⅲ)
- سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ (Ⅳ)
- Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! (Ⅵ)
74. 27  
and what will teach thee what is Sakar?
- Wama adraka ma saqaru (Ⅰ)
- And what will make you understand what the burning (Hell-fire) is? (Ⅱ)
- - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - (Ⅲ)
- وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ (Ⅳ)
- And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? (Ⅵ)
74. 28  
It spares not, neither leaves alone
- La tubqee wala tatharu (Ⅰ)
- It leaves naught, it spares naught. (Ⅱ)
- It leaveth naught; it spareth naught (Ⅲ)
- لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ (Ⅳ)
- Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- (Ⅵ)
74. 29  
scorching the flesh;
- Lawwahatun lilbashari (Ⅰ)
- It scorches (darkens the colour) and shrivels the mortal. (Ⅱ)
- It shrivelleth the man. (Ⅲ)
- لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ (Ⅳ)
- Darkening and changing the colour of man! (Ⅵ)
74. 30  
over it are nineteen.
- AAalayha tisAAata AAashara (Ⅰ)
- Over it are nineteen. (Ⅱ)
- Above it are nineteen. (Ⅲ)
- عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ (Ⅳ)
- Over it are Nineteen. (Ⅵ)
74. 31  
We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, ´What did God intend by this as a similitude?´ So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals.
- Wama jaAAalna ashaba alnnari illa malaikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmuminoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari (Ⅰ)
- And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the Book (scriptures) may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose heart is a disease and the unbelievers may say, "What does Allah mean by this parable?" Thus does Allah make err whom He wills, and He guides whom He wills, and none knows the hosts (or forces) of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. (Ⅱ)
- We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude ? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. (Ⅲ)
- وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ النَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَائِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِيمَانًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَالْكَافِرُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَن يَشَاءُ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ (Ⅳ)
- And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. (Ⅵ)
74. 32  
Nay! By the moon
- Kalla waalqamari (Ⅰ)
- Nay; I swear by (or call to witness) the moon, (Ⅱ)
- Nay, by the Moon (Ⅲ)
- كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ (Ⅳ)
- Nay, verily: By the Moon, (Ⅵ)
74. 33  
and the night when it retreats
- Waallayli ith adbara (Ⅰ)
- And by the night when it departs, (Ⅱ)
- And the night when it withdraweth (Ⅲ)
- وَاللَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ (Ⅳ)
- And by the Night as it retreateth, (Ⅵ)
74. 34  
and the dawn when it is white,
- Waalssubhi itha asfara (Ⅰ)
- And by the Dawn when it shines forth; (Ⅱ)
- And the dawn when it shineth forth, (Ⅲ)
- وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا أَسْفَرَ (Ⅳ)
- And by the Dawn as it shineth forth,- (Ⅵ)
74. 35  
surely it is one of the greatest things
- Innaha laihda alkubari (Ⅰ)
- Surely, this is but one of the mighty Signs, (Ⅱ)
- Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents) (Ⅲ)
- إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى الْكُبَرِ (Ⅳ)
- This is but one of the mighty (portents), (Ⅵ)
74. 36  
as a warner to mortals.
- Natheeran lilbashari (Ⅰ)
- A warning to mortals, (Ⅱ)
- As a warning unto men, (Ⅲ)
- نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ (Ⅳ)
- A warning to mankind,- (Ⅵ)
74. 37  
to whoever of you desires to go forward or lag behind.
- Liman shaa minkum an yataqaddama aw yataakhkhara (Ⅰ)
- To him among you who wishes to go forward or remain behind. (Ⅱ)
- Unto him of you who will advance or hang back. (Ⅲ)
- لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ (Ⅳ)
- To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;- (Ⅵ)
74. 38  
Every soul shall be pledged for what it has earned,
- Kullu nafsin bima kasabat raheenatun (Ⅰ)
- Every soul is held in pledge for its own deeds, (Ⅱ)
- Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds; (Ⅲ)
- كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ (Ⅳ)
- Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds. (Ⅵ)
74. 39  
save the Companions of the Right;
- Illa ashaba alyameeni (Ⅰ)
- Except the people of the right hand, (Ⅱ)
- Save those who will stand on the right hand. (Ⅲ)
- إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ الْيَمِينِ (Ⅳ)
- Except the Companions of the Right Hand. (Ⅵ)
74. 40  
in Gardens they will question
- Fee jannatin yatasaaloona (Ⅰ)
- In Gardens, they shall ask each other (Ⅱ)
- In gardens they will ask one another (Ⅲ)
- فِي جَنَّاتٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ (Ⅳ)
- (They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each other, (Ⅵ)
74. 41  
concerning the sinners,
- AAani almujrimeena (Ⅰ)
- And ask the guilty, (Ⅱ)
- Concerning the guilty: (Ⅲ)
- عَنِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ (Ⅳ)
- And (ask) of the Sinners: (Ⅵ)
74. 42  
´What thrusted you into Sakar?´
- Ma salakakum fee saqara (Ⅰ)
- "What has brought you into hell?" (Ⅱ)
- What hath brought you to this burning ? (Ⅲ)
- مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ (Ⅳ)
- "What led you into Hell Fire?" (Ⅵ)
74. 43  
They shall say, ´We were not of those who prayed, and
- Qaloo lam naku mina almusalleena (Ⅰ)
- They shall say, "We were not of those who prayed; (Ⅱ)
- They will answer: We were not of those who prayed (Ⅲ)
- قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ (Ⅳ)
- They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; (Ⅵ)
74. 44  
we fed not the needy,
- Walam naku nutAAimu almiskeena (Ⅰ)
- "And we used not to feed the poor; (Ⅱ)
- Nor did we feed the wretched. (Ⅲ)
- وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ (Ⅳ)
- "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent; (Ⅵ)
74. 45  
and we plunged along with the plungers,
- Wakunna nakhoodu maAAa alkhaideena (Ⅰ)
- "And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who entered into vain discourses. (Ⅱ)
- We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders, (Ⅲ)
- وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِينَ (Ⅳ)
- "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; (Ⅵ)
74. 46  
and we cried lies to the Day of Doom,
- Wakunna nukaththibu biyawmi alddeeni (Ⅰ)
- "And we used to call the Day of Judgment a lie; (Ⅱ)
- And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, (Ⅲ)
- وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ (Ⅳ)
- "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, (Ⅵ)
74. 47  
till the Certain came to us.´ --
- Hatta atana alyaqeenu (Ⅰ)
- "Till the inevitable event (death) overtook us." (Ⅱ)
- Till the Inevitable came unto us. (Ⅲ)
- حَتَّىٰ أَتَانَا الْيَقِينُ (Ⅳ)
- "Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain." (Ⅵ)
74. 48  
Then the intercession of the intercessors shall not profit them.
- Fama tanfaAAuhum shafaAAatu alshshafiAAeena (Ⅰ)
- The intercession of no mediators shall avail them then. (Ⅱ)
- The mediation of no mediators will avail them then. (Ⅲ)
- فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشَّافِعِينَ (Ⅳ)
- Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them. (Ⅵ)
74. 49  
What ails them, that they turn away from the Reminder,
- Fama lahum AAani alttathkirati muAArideena (Ⅰ)
- What is then the matter with them that they turn away from the admonition, (Ⅱ)
- Why now turn they away from the Admonishment, (Ⅲ)
- فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ (Ⅳ)
- Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?- (Ⅵ)
