A Proper Understanding of Religion
It is essential to have proper understanding of what religion is all about. The Chinese word for religion is 宗教 (Zong-jiao). The character 宗 (Zong) means ‘main,’ ‘important,’ or ‘noble and esteemed.’ The character 教 (Jiao) means ‘education,’ ‘teachings,’ or ‘actions that serve to moralise, civilise or enlighten humanity.’ Put together, 宗教 (Zong-jiao) means ‘the main education,’ ‘the important teachings,’ and ‘the noble, esteemed actions that moralise, civilise, or enlighten people.’ Observing closely every major religion’s sacred scriptures and history of education, we can see that the principal contents of religious teachings can be classified into four categories: morality, ethics, causality and sacred wisdom.
This commentary on God Loves All Beings - Quotes from the World Religion by Master Chin Kung was produced between 2018 and 2019 and recorded at the UNESCO. Although intended for a Buddhist audience, the commentary is remarkably open-minded regarding the teachings of all religions and as such deserves to be read by everyone, believers and non-believers alike.

Now, this being the case, in this method, what is meant by sitting in meditation? In this method, to sit means to be free from all obstacles, and externally not to allow thoughts to rise from the mind over any sphere of objects. To meditate means to realize the imperturbability of one's original nature. What is meant by meditation and calmness? Meditation means to be free from all characters externally; calmness means to be unperturbed internally. If there are characters outside and the inner mind is not disturbed, one's original nature is naturally pure and calm. It is only because of the spheres of objects that there is contact, and contact leads to perturbation. There is calmness when one is free from characters and is not perturbed. There is meditation when one is externally free from characters, and there is calmness when one is internally undisturbed. Meditation and calmness mean that external meditation is attained and internal calmness is achieved.

Meister Eckhart
Dominican preacher, theologian and mystic, born about 1260 at Hochheim, near Gotha; died in 1327 at Cologne. He made his philosophical and theological studies in the Dominican Order. Although a profound mystic he was also an able man of affairs, admirably manifesting the spirit of his order by uniting throughout his career great activity with contemplation. After a period of teaching he was made, in 1298, prior of the Dominican convent at Erfurt and vicar-provincial of Thuringia. Two years later he began to lecture at Paris, where in 1302 his order gave him the degree of Master of Sacred Theology.
