Life and teaching of Tukaram

Tukaram : Biography

Tukaram (?1598-?1650) was born into a family of poor and unlearned peasants. Thanking God for this humble birth, he writes: 'Well done, Lord Had I been a learned man, pride and arrogance would have taken over and I would have scorned the service of the saints." Simple and direct, he was one of the great devotional poets of India.
