Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
- Un homme peut-il être utile à Dieu? Non; le sage n'est utile qu'à lui-même. (Ⅱ) - πότερον οὐχὶ ὁ κύριός ἐστιν ὁ διδάσκων σύνεσιν καὶ ἐπιστήμην (Ⅲ) - Numquid Deo potest comparari homo,/ etiam cum perfectæ fuerit scientiæ ?/ (Ⅳ) - 2 ׃22 הלאל יסכן גבר כי יסכן עלימו משכיל (Ⅴ)

Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
- Si tu es juste, est-ce à l'avantage du Tout Puissant? Si tu es intègre dans tes voies, qu'y gagne-t-il? (Ⅱ) - τί γὰρ μέλει τω̨̃ κυρίω̨ ἐὰν σὺ ἠ̃σθα τοι̃ς ἔργοις ἄμεμπτος ἢ ὠφέλεια ὅτι ἁπλώση̨ς τὴν ὁδόν σου (Ⅲ) - Quid prodest Deo, si justus fueris ?/ aut quid ei confers, si immaculata fuerit via tua ?/ (Ⅳ) - 3 ׃22 החפץ לשדי כי תצדק ואם בצע כי תתם דרכיך (Ⅴ)

Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
- Est-ce par crainte de toi qu'il te châtie, Qu'il entre en jugement avec toi? (Ⅱ) - ἠ̃ λόγον σου ποιούμενος ἐλέγξει σε καὶ συνεισελεύσεταί σοι εἰς κρίσιν (Ⅲ) - Numquid timens arguet te,/ et veniet tecum in judicium,/ (Ⅳ) - 4 ׃22 המיראתך יכיחך יבוא עמך במשפט (Ⅴ)

Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?
- Ta méchanceté n'est-elle pas grande? Tes iniquités ne sont-elles pas infinies? (Ⅱ) - πότερον οὐχ ἡ κακία σού ἐστιν πολλή ἀναρίθμητοι δέ σού εἰσιν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι (Ⅲ) - et non propter malitiam tuam plurimam,/ et infinitas iniquitates tuas ?/ (Ⅳ) - 5 ׃22 הלא רעתך רבה ואין קץ לעונתיך (Ⅴ)

For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
- Tu enlevais sans motif des gages à tes frères, Tu privais de leurs vêtements ceux qui étaient nus; (Ⅱ) - ἠνεχύραζες δὲ τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου διὰ κενη̃ς ἀμφίασιν δὲ γυμνω̃ν ἀφείλου (Ⅲ) - Abstulisti enim pignus fratrum tuorum sine causa,/ et nudos spoliasti vestibus./ (Ⅳ) - 6 ׃22 כי תחבל אחיך חנם ובגדי ערומים תפשיט (Ⅴ)

Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.
- Tu ne donnais point d'eau à l'homme altéré, Tu refusais du pain à l'homme affamé. (Ⅱ) - οὐδὲ ὕδωρ διψω̃ντας ἐπότισας ἀλλὰ πεινώντων ἐστέρησας ψωμόν (Ⅲ) - Aquam lasso non dedisti,/ et esurienti subtraxisti panem./ (Ⅳ) - 7 ׃22 לא מים עיף תשקה ומרעב תמנע לחם (Ⅴ)

But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
- Tu renvoyais les veuves à vide; Les bras des orphelins étaient brisés. (Ⅱ) - χήρας δὲ ἐξαπέστειλας κενάς ὀρφανοὺς δὲ ἐκάκωσας (Ⅲ) - Viduas dimisisti vacuas,/ et lacertos pupillorum comminuisti./ (Ⅳ) - 9 ׃22 אלמנות שלחת ריקם וזרעות יתמים ידכא (Ⅴ)

Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
- C'est pour cela que tu es entouré de pièges, Et que la terreur t'a saisi tout à coup. (Ⅱ) - τοιγαρου̃ν ἐκύκλωσάν σε παγίδες καὶ ἐσπούδασέν σε πόλεμος ἐξαίσιος (Ⅲ) - Propterea circumdatus es laqueis,/ et conturbat te formido subita./ (Ⅳ) - 10 ׃22 על כן סביבותיך פחים ויבהלך פחד פתאם (Ⅴ)

Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.
- Ne vois-tu donc pas ces ténèbres, Ces eaux débordées qui t'envahissent? (Ⅱ) - τὸ φω̃ς σοι σκότος ἀπέβη κοιμηθέντα δὲ ὕδωρ σε ἐκάλυψεν (Ⅲ) - Et putabas te tenebras non visurum,/ et impetu aquarum inundantium non oppressum iri ?/ (Ⅳ) - 11 ׃22 או חשך לא תראה ושפעת מים תכסך (Ⅴ)

Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
- Dieu n'est-il pas en haut dans les cieux? Regarde le sommet des étoiles, comme il est élevé! (Ⅱ) - μὴ οὐχὶ ὁ τὰ ὑψηλὰ ναίων ἐφορα̨̃ τοὺς δὲ ὕβρει φερομένους ἐταπείνωσεν (Ⅲ) - an non cogitas quod Deus excelsior cælo sit,/ et super stellarum verticem sublimetur ?/ (Ⅳ) - 12 ׃22 הלא אלוה גבה שמים וראה ראש[c] כוכבים כי רמו (Ⅴ)

And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.
- Les nuées l'enveloppent, et il ne voit rien; Il ne parcourt que la voûte des cieux. (Ⅱ) - νέφη ἀποκρυφὴ αὐτου̃ καὶ οὐχ ὁραθήσεται καὶ γυ̃ρον οὐρανου̃ διαπορεύσεται (Ⅲ) - Nubes latibulum ejus, nec nostra considerat,/ et circa cardines cæli perambulat./ (Ⅳ) - 14 ׃22 עבים סתר לו[c] ולא יראה וחוג שמים יתהלך (Ⅴ)

Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?
- Eh quoi! tu voudrais prendre l'ancienne route Qu'ont suivie les hommes d'iniquité? (Ⅱ) - μὴ τρίβον αἰώνιον φυλάξεις ἣν ἐπάτησαν ἄνδρες ἄδικοι (Ⅲ) - Numquid semitam sæculorum custodire cupis,/ quam calcaverunt viri iniqui,/ (Ⅳ) - 15 ׃22 הארח עולם תשמר אשר דרכו מתי און (Ⅴ)

Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:
- Ils ont été emportés avant le temps, Ils ont eu la durée d'un torrent qui s'écoule. (Ⅱ) - οἳ συνελήμφθησαν ἄωροι ποταμὸς ἐπιρρέων οἱ θεμέλιοι αὐτω̃ν (Ⅲ) - qui sublati sunt ante tempus suum,/ et fluvius subvertit fundamentum eorum ?/ (Ⅳ) - 16 ׃22 אשר קמטו ולא עת נהר יוצק יסודם (Ⅴ)

Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?
- Ils disaient à Dieu: Retire-toi de nous; Que peut faire pour nous le Tout Puissant? (Ⅱ) - οἱ λέγοντες κύριος τί ποιήσει ἡμι̃ν ἢ τί ἐπάξεται ἡμι̃ν ὁ παντοκράτωρ (Ⅲ) - Qui dicebant Deo : Recede a nobis :/ et quasi nihil posset facere Omnipotens, æstimabant eum,/ (Ⅳ) - 17 ׃22 האמרים לאל סור ממנו ומה יפעל שדי למו (Ⅴ)

Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
- Les justes, témoins de leur chute, se réjouiront, Et l'innocent se moquera d'eux: (Ⅱ) - ἰδόντες δίκαιοι ἐγέλασαν ἄμεμπτος δὲ ἐμυκτήρισεν (Ⅲ) - Videbunt justi, et lætabuntur,/ et innocens subsannabit eos :/ (Ⅳ) - 19 ׃22 יראו צדיקים וישמחו ונקי ילעג למו (Ⅴ)

Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
- Attache-toi donc à Dieu, et tu auras la paix; Tu jouiras ainsi du bonheur. (Ⅱ) - γενου̃ δὴ σκληρός ἐὰν ὑπομείνη̨ς εἰ̃τ' ὁ καρπός σου ἔσται ἐν ἀγαθοι̃ς (Ⅲ) - Acquiesce igitur ei, et habeto pacem,/ et per hæc habebis fructus optimos./ (Ⅳ) - 21 ׃22 הסכן נא עמו ושלם[1] בהם תבואתך טובה (Ⅴ)

Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
- Reçois de sa bouche l'instruction, Et mets dans ton coeur ses paroles. (Ⅱ) - ἔκλαβε δὲ ἐκ στόματος αὐτου̃ ἐξηγορίαν καὶ ἀνάλαβε τὰ ῥήματα αὐτου̃ ἐν καρδία̨ σου (Ⅲ) - Suscipe ex ore illius legem,/ et pone sermones ejus in corde tuo./ (Ⅳ) - 22 ׃22 קח נא מפיו תורה ושים אמריו בלבבך (Ⅴ)

If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.
- Tu seras rétabli, si tu reviens au Tout Puissant, Si tu éloignes l'iniquité de ta tente. (Ⅱ) - ἐὰν δὲ ἐπιστραφη̨̃ς καὶ ταπεινώση̨ς σεαυτὸν ἔναντι κυρίου πόρρω ἐποίησας ἀπὸ διαίτης σου τὸ ἄδικον (Ⅲ) - Si reversus fueris ad Omnipotentem, ædificaberis,/ et longe facies iniquitatem a tabernaculo tuo./ (Ⅳ) - 23 ׃22 אם תשוב עד שדי תבנה תרחיק עולה מאהלך (Ⅴ)

Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.
- Et le Tout Puissant sera ton or, Ton argent, ta richesse. (Ⅱ) - ἔσται οὐ̃ν σου ὁ παντοκράτωρ βοηθὸς ἀπὸ ἐχθρω̃ν καθαρὸν δὲ ἀποδώσει σε ὥσπερ ἀργύριον πεπυρωμένον (Ⅲ) - Eritque Omnipotens contra hostes tuos,/ et argentum coacervabitur tibi./ (Ⅳ) - 25 ׃22 והיה שדי בצריך וכסף תועפות לך (Ⅴ)

For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.
- Alors tu feras du Tout Puissant tes délices, Tu élèveras vers Dieu ta face; (Ⅱ) - εἰ̃τα παρρησιασθήση̨ ἔναντι κυρίου ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἱλαρω̃ς (Ⅲ) - Tunc super Omnipotentem deliciis afflues,/ et elevabis ad Deum faciem tuam./ (Ⅳ) - 26 ׃22 כי אז על שדי תתענג ותשא אל אלוה פניך (Ⅴ)

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.
- Vienne l'humiliation, tu prieras pour ton relèvement: Dieu secourt celui dont le regard est abattu. (Ⅱ) - ὅτι ἐταπείνωσεν αὐτόν καὶ ἐρει̃ς ὑπερηφανεύσατο καὶ κύφοντα ὀφθαλμοι̃ς σώσει (Ⅲ) - Qui enim humiliatus fuerit, erit in gloria,/ et qui inclinaverit oculos, ipse salvabitur./ (Ⅳ) - 29 ׃22 כי השפילו ותאמר גוה ושח עינים יושע (Ⅴ)

He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.
