39. 1

And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmaelites, which had brought him down thither.

- On fit descendre Joseph en Égypte; et Potiphar, officier de Pharaon, chef des gardes, Égyptien, l'acheta des Ismaélites qui l'y avaient fait descendre. (Ⅱ)

- Ιωσηφ δὲ κατήχθη εἰς Αἴγυπτον καὶ ἐκτήσατο αὐτὸν Πετεφρης ὁ εὐνου̃χος Φαραω ἀρχιμάγειρος ἀνὴρ Αἰγύπτιος ἐκ χειρὸς Ισμαηλιτω̃ν οἳ κατήγαγον αὐτὸν ἐκει̃ (Ⅲ)

- Igitur Joseph ductus est in Ægyptum, emitque eum Putiphar eunuchus Pharaonis, princeps exercitus, vir ægyptius, de manu Ismaëlitarum, a quibus perductus erat. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 1 ׃39 ויוסף הורד מצרימה ויקנהו פוטיפר סריס פרעה שר הטבחים איש מצרי מיד הישמעאלים אשר הורדהו שמה ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 2

And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

- L'Éternel fut avec lui, et la prospérité l'accompagna; il habitait dans la maison de son maître, l'Égyptien. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἠ̃ν κύριος μετὰ Ιωσηφ καὶ ἠ̃ν ἀνὴρ ἐπιτυγχάνων καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τω̨̃ οἴκω̨ παρὰ τω̨̃ κυρίω̨ τω̨̃ Αἰγυπτίω̨ (Ⅲ)

- Fuitque Dominus cum eo, et erat vir in cunctis prospere agens : habitavitque in domo domini sui, (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 2 ׃39 ויהי יהוה את יוסף ויהי איש מצליח ויהי בבית אדניו המצרי ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 3

And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

- Son maître vit que l'Éternel était avec lui, et que l'Éternel faisait prospérer entre ses mains tout ce qu'il entreprenait. (Ⅱ)

- ἤ̨δει δὲ ὁ κύριος αὐτου̃ ὅτι κύριος μετ' αὐτου̃ καὶ ὅσα ἂν ποιη̨̃ κύριος εὐοδοι̃ ἐν ται̃ς χερσὶν αὐτου̃ (Ⅲ)

- qui optime noverat Dominum esse cum eo, et omnia, quæ gerebat, ab eo dirigi in manu illius. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 3 ׃39 וירא אדניו כי יהוה אתו וכל אשר הוא עשה יהוה מצליח בידו ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 4

And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

- Joseph trouva grâce aux yeux de son maître, qui l'employa à son service, l'établit sur sa maison, et lui confia tout ce qu'il possédait. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ εὑ̃ρεν Ιωσηφ χάριν ἐναντίον του̃ κυρίου αὐτου̃ εὐηρέστει δὲ αὐτω̨̃ καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ του̃ οἴκου αὐτου̃ καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἠ̃ν αὐτω̨̃ ἔδωκεν διὰ χειρὸς Ιωσηφ (Ⅲ)

- Invenitque Joseph gratiam coram domino suo, et ministrabat ei : a quo præpositus omnibus gubernabat creditam sibi domum, et universa quæ ei tradita fuerant : (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 4 ׃39 וימצא יוסף חן בעיניו וישרת אתו ויפקדהו על ביתו וכל יש לו נתן בידו ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 5

And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.

- Dès que Potiphar l'eut établi sur sa maison et sur tout ce qu'il possédait, l'Éternel bénit la maison de l'Égyptien, à cause de Joseph; et la bénédiction de l'Éternel fut sur tout ce qui lui appartenait, soit à la maison, soit aux champs. (Ⅱ)

- ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τὸ κατασταθη̃ναι αὐτὸν ἐπὶ του̃ οἴκου αὐτου̃ καὶ ἐπὶ πάντα ὅσα ἠ̃ν αὐτω̨̃ καὶ ηὐλόγησεν κύριος τὸν οἰ̃κον του̃ Αἰγυπτίου διὰ Ιωσηφ καὶ ἐγενήθη εὐλογία κυρίου ἐν πα̃σιν τοι̃ς ὑπάρχουσιν αὐτω̨̃ ἐν τω̨̃ οἴκω̨ καὶ ἐν τω̨̃ ἀγρω̨̃ (Ⅲ)

- benedixitque Dominus domui Ægyptii propter Joseph, et multiplicavit tam in ædibus quam in agris cunctam ejus substantiam : (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 5 ׃39 ויהי מאז הפקיד אתו בביתו ועל כל אשר יש לו ויברך יהוה את בית המצרי בגלל יוסף ויהי ברכת יהוה בכל אשר יש לו בבית ובשדה ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 6

And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favored.

- Il abandonna aux mains de Joseph tout ce qui lui appartenait, et il n'avait avec lui d'autre soin que celui de prendre sa nourriture. Or, Joseph était beau de taille et beau de figure. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν πάντα ὅσα ἠ̃ν αὐτω̨̃ εἰς χει̃ρας Ιωσηφ καὶ οὐκ ἤ̨δει τω̃ν καθ' ἑαυτὸν οὐδὲν πλὴν του̃ ἄρτου οὑ̃ ἤσθιεν αὐτός καὶ ἠ̃ν Ιωσηφ καλὸς τω̨̃ εἴδει καὶ ὡραι̃ος τη̨̃ ὄψει σφόδρα (Ⅲ)

- nec quidquam aliud noverat, nisi panem quo vescebatur. Erat autem Joseph pulchra facie, et decorus aspectu. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 6 ׃39 ויעזב כל אשר לו ביד יוסף ולא ידע אתו מאומה כי אם הלחם אשר הוא אוכל ויהי יוסף יפה תאר ויפה מראה ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 7

And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.

- Après ces choses, il arriva que la femme de son maître porta les yeux sur Joseph, et dit: Couche avec moi! (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τὰ ῥήματα ταυ̃τα καὶ ἐπέβαλεν ἡ γυνὴ του̃ κυρίου αὐτου̃ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτη̃ς ἐπὶ Ιωσηφ καὶ εἰ̃πεν κοιμήθητι μετ' ἐμου̃ (Ⅲ)

- Post multos itaque dies injecit domina sua oculos suos in Joseph, et ait : Dormi mecum. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 7 ׃39 ויהי אחר הדברים האלה ותשא אשת אדניו את עיניה אל יוסף ותאמר שכבה עמי ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 8

But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;

- Il refusa, et dit à la femme de son maître: Voici, mon maître ne prend avec moi connaissance de rien dans la maison, et il a remis entre mes mains tout ce qui lui appartient. (Ⅱ)

- ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἤθελεν εἰ̃πεν δὲ τη̨̃ γυναικὶ του̃ κυρίου αὐτου̃ εἰ ὁ κύριός μου οὐ γινώσκει δι' ἐμὲ οὐδὲν ἐν τω̨̃ οἴκω̨ αὐτου̃ καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐστὶν αὐτω̨̃ ἔδωκεν εἰς τὰς χει̃ράς μου (Ⅲ)

- Qui nequaquam acquiescens operi nefario, dixit ad eam : Ecce dominus meus, omnibus mihi traditis, ignorat quid habeat in domo sua : (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 8 ׃39 וימאן ויאמר אל אשת אדניו הן אדני לא ידע אתי מה בבית וכל אשר יש לו נתן בידי ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 9

There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

- Il n'est pas plus grand que moi dans cette maison, et il ne m'a rien interdit, excepté toi, parce que tu es sa femme. Comment ferais-je un aussi grand mal et pécherais-je contre Dieu? (Ⅱ)

- καὶ οὐχ ὑπερέχει ἐν τη̨̃ οἰκία̨ ταύτη̨ οὐθὲν ἐμου̃ οὐδὲ ὑπεξή̨ρηται ἀπ' ἐμου̃ οὐδὲν πλὴν σου̃ διὰ τὸ σὲ γυναι̃κα αὐτου̃ εἰ̃ναι καὶ πω̃ς ποιήσω τὸ ῥη̃μα τὸ πονηρὸν του̃το καὶ ἁμαρτήσομαι ἐναντίον του̃ θεου̃ (Ⅲ)

- nec quidquam est quod non in mea sit potestate, vel non tradiderit mihi, præter te, quæ uxor ejus es : quomodo ergo possum hoc malum facere, et peccare in Deum meum ? (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 9 ׃39 איננו גדול בבית הזה ממני ולא חשך ממני מאומה כי אם אותך באשר את אשתו ואיך אעשה הרעה הגדלה הזאת וחטאתי לאלהים ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 10

And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

- Quoiqu'elle parlât tous les jours à Joseph, il refusa de coucher auprès d'elle, d'être avec elle. (Ⅱ)

- ἡνίκα δὲ ἐλάλει τω̨̃ Ιωσηφ ἡμέραν ἐξ ἡμέρας καὶ οὐχ ὑπήκουσεν αὐτη̨̃ καθεύδειν μετ' αὐτη̃ς του̃ συγγενέσθαι αὐτη̨̃ (Ⅲ)

- Hujuscemodi verbis per singulos dies, et mulier molesta erat adolescenti : et ille recusabat stuprum. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 10 ׃39 ויהי כדברה אל יוסף יום יום ולא שמע אליה לשכב אצלה להיות עמה ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 11

And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.

- Un jour qu'il était entré dans la maison pour faire son ouvrage, et qu'il n'y avait là aucun des gens de la maison, (Ⅱ)

- ἐγένετο δὲ τοιαύτη τις ἡμέρα εἰση̃λθεν Ιωσηφ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν ποιει̃ν τὰ ἔργα αὐτου̃ καὶ οὐθεὶς ἠ̃ν τω̃ν ἐν τη̨̃ οἰκία̨ ἔσω (Ⅲ)

- Accidit autem quadam die ut intraret Joseph domum, et operis quippiam absque arbitris faceret : (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 11 ׃39 ויהי כהיום הזה ויבא הביתה לעשות מלאכתו ואין איש מאנשי הבית שם בבית ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 12

And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

- elle le saisit par son vêtement, en disant: Couche avec moi! Il lui laissa son vêtement dans la main, et s'enfuit au dehors. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἐπεσπάσατο αὐτὸν τω̃ν ἱματίων λέγουσα κοιμήθητι μετ' ἐμου̃ καὶ καταλιπὼν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτου̃ ἐν ται̃ς χερσὶν αὐτη̃ς ἔφυγεν καὶ ἐξη̃λθεν ἔξω (Ⅲ)

- et illa, apprehensa lacinia vestimenti ejus, diceret : Dormi mecum. Qui relicto in manu ejus pallio fugit, et egressus est foras. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 12 ׃39 ותתפשהו בבגדו לאמר שכבה עמי ויעזב בגדו בידה וינס ויצא החוצה ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 13

And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

- Lorsqu'elle vit qu'il lui avait laissé son vêtement dans la main, et qu'il s'était enfui dehors, (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς εἰ̃δεν ὅτι κατέλιπεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτου̃ ἐν ται̃ς χερσὶν αὐτη̃ς καὶ ἔφυγεν καὶ ἐξη̃λθεν ἔξω (Ⅲ)

- Cumque vidisset mulier vestem in manibus suis, et se esse contemptam, (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 13 ׃39 ויהי כראותה כי עזב בגדו בידה וינס החוצה ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 14

That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:

- elle appela les gens de sa maison, et leur dit: Voyez, il nous a amené un Hébreu pour se jouer de nous. Cet homme est venu vers moi pour coucher avec moi; mais j'ai crié à haute voix. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τοὺς ὄντας ἐν τη̨̃ οἰκία̨ καὶ εἰ̃πεν αὐτοι̃ς λέγουσα ἴδετε εἰσήγαγεν ἡμι̃ν παι̃δα Εβραι̃ον ἐμπαίζειν ἡμι̃ν εἰση̃λθεν πρός με λέγων κοιμήθητι μετ' ἐμου̃ καὶ ἐβόησα φωνη̨̃ μεγάλη̨ (Ⅲ)

- vocavit ad se homines domus suæ, et ait ad eos : En introduxit virum hebræum, ut illuderet nobis : ingressus est ad me, ut coiret mecum : cumque ego succlamassem, (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 14 ׃39 ותקרא לאנשי ביתה ותאמר להם לאמר ראו הביא לנו איש עברי לצחק בנו בא אלי לשכב עמי ואקרא בקול גדול ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 15

And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.

- Et quand il a entendu que j'élevais la voix et que je criais, il a laissé son vêtement à côté de moi et s'est enfui dehors. (Ⅱ)

- ἐν δὲ τω̨̃ ἀκου̃σαι αὐτὸν ὅτι ὕψωσα τὴν φωνήν μου καὶ ἐβόησα καταλιπὼν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτου̃ παρ' ἐμοὶ ἔφυγεν καὶ ἐξη̃λθεν ἔξω (Ⅲ)

- et audisset vocem meam, reliquit pallium quod tenebam, et fugit foras. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 15 ׃39 ויהי כשמעו כי הרימתי קולי ואקרא ויעזב בגדו אצלי וינס ויצא החוצה ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 16

And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.

- Et elle posa le vêtement de Joseph à côté d'elle, jusqu'à ce que son maître rentrât à la maison. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ καταλιμπάνει τὰ ἱμάτια παρ' ἑαυτη̨̃ ἕως ἠ̃λθεν ὁ κύριος εἰς τὸν οἰ̃κον αὐτου̃ (Ⅲ)

- In argumentum ergo fidei retentum pallium ostendit marito revertenti domum, (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 16 ׃39 ותנח בגדו אצלה עד בוא אדניו אל ביתו ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 17

And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:

- Alors elle lui parla ainsi: L'esclave hébreu que tu nous as amené est venu vers moi pour se jouer de moi. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἐλάλησεν αὐτω̨̃ κατὰ τὰ ῥήματα ταυ̃τα λέγουσα εἰση̃λθεν πρός με ὁ παι̃ς ὁ Εβραι̃ος ὃν εἰσήγαγες πρὸς ἡμα̃ς ἐμπαι̃ξαί μοι καὶ εἰ̃πέν μοι κοιμηθήσομαι μετὰ σου̃ (Ⅲ)

- et ait : Ingressus est ad me servus hebræus quem adduxisti, ut illuderet mihi : (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 17 ׃39 ותדבר אליו כדברים האלה לאמר בא אלי העבד העברי אשר הבאת לנו לצחק בי ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 18

And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.

- Et comme j'ai élevé la voix et que j'ai crié, il a laissé son vêtement à côté de moi et s'est enfui dehors. (Ⅱ)

- ὡς δὲ ἤκουσεν ὅτι ὕψωσα τὴν φωνήν μου καὶ ἐβόησα κατέλιπεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτου̃ παρ' ἐμοὶ καὶ ἔφυγεν καὶ ἐξη̃λθεν ἔξω (Ⅲ)

- cumque audisset me clamare, reliquit pallium quod tenebam, et fugit foras. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 18 ׃39 ויהי כהרימי קולי ואקרא ויעזב בגדו אצלי וינס החוצה ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 19

And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.

- Après avoir entendu les paroles de sa femme, qui lui disait: Voilà ce que m'a fait ton esclave! le maître de Joseph fut enflammé de colère. (Ⅱ)

- ἐγένετο δὲ ὡς ἤκουσεν ὁ κύριος αὐτου̃ τὰ ῥήματα τη̃ς γυναικὸς αὐτου̃ ὅσα ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσα οὕτως ἐποίησέν μοι ὁ παι̃ς σου καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργη̨̃ (Ⅲ)

- His auditis dominus, et nimium credulus verbis conjugis, iratus est valde : (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 19 ׃39 ויהי כשמע אדניו את דברי אשתו אשר דברה אליו לאמר כדברים האלה עשה‪[1]‬ לי עבדך ויחר אפו ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 20

And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.

- Il prit Joseph, et le mit dans la prison, dans le lieu où les prisonniers du roi étaient enfermés: il fut là, en prison. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ λαβὼν ὁ κύριος Ιωσηφ ἐνέβαλεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ ὀχύρωμα εἰς τὸν τόπον ἐν ὡ̨̃ οἱ δεσμω̃ται του̃ βασιλέως κατέχονται ἐκει̃ ἐν τω̨̃ ὀχυρώματι (Ⅲ)

- tradiditque Joseph in carcerem, ubi vincti regis custodiebantur, et erat ibi clausus.\ (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 20 ׃39 ויקח אדני יוסף אתו ויתנהו אל בית הסהר מקום אשר *אסורי **אסירי המלך אסורים ויהי שם בבית הסהר ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 21

But the LORD was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

- L'Éternel fut avec Joseph, et il étendit sur lui sa bonté. Il le mit en faveur aux yeux du chef de la prison. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἠ̃ν κύριος μετὰ Ιωσηφ καὶ κατέχεεν αὐτου̃ ἔλεος καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτω̨̃ χάριν ἐναντίον του̃ ἀρχιδεσμοφύλακος (Ⅲ)

- Fuit autem Dominus cum Joseph, et misertus illius dedit ei gratiam in conspectu principis carceris. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 21 ׃39 ויהי יהוה את יוסף ויט אליו חסד ויתן חנו בעיני שר בית הסהר ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 22

And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

- Et le chef de la prison plaça sous sa surveillance tous les prisonniers qui étaient dans la prison; et rien ne s'y faisait que par lui. (Ⅱ)

- καὶ ἔδωκεν ὁ ἀρχιδεσμοφύλαξ τὸ δεσμωτήριον διὰ χειρὸς Ιωσηφ καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀπηγμένους ὅσοι ἐν τω̨̃ δεσμωτηρίω̨ καὶ πάντα ὅσα ποιου̃σιν ἐκει̃ (Ⅲ)

- Qui tradidit in manu illius universos vinctos qui in custodia tenebantur : et quidquid fiebat, sub ipso erat. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 22 ׃39 ויתן שר בית הסהר ביד יוסף את כל האסירם אשר בבית הסהר ואת כל אשר עשים שם הוא היה עשה ‬ (Ⅴ)

39. 23

The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.

- Le chef de la prison ne prenait aucune connaissance de ce que Joseph avait en main, parce que l'Éternel était avec lui. Et l'Éternel donnait de la réussite à ce qu'il faisait. (Ⅱ)

- οὐκ ἠ̃ν ὁ ἀρχιδεσμοφύλαξ του̃ δεσμωτηρίου γινώσκων δι' αὐτὸν οὐθέν πάντα γὰρ ἠ̃ν διὰ χειρὸς Ιωσηφ διὰ τὸ τὸν κύριον μετ' αὐτου̃ εἰ̃ναι καὶ ὅσα αὐτὸς ἐποίει κύριος εὐώδου ἐν ται̃ς χερσὶν αὐτου̃ (Ⅲ)

- Nec noverat aliquid, cunctis ei creditis : Dominus enim erat cum illo, et omnia opera ejus dirigebat. (Ⅳ)

- ‫ 23 ׃39 אין שר בית הסהר ראה את כל מאומה בידו באשר יהוה אתו ואשר הוא עשה יהוה מצליח ס‬ (Ⅴ)
